Just saw The Cult at the IP in Biloxi and was surprised at how awesome Ian Astbury still sounds. The entire band put on a great show, but he and Billy Duffy could have been up there by themselves and it wouldn't have made much difference. It was my first time seeing them and I had a blast.

Did anybody here see them in their heyday? I can only compare their sound to what I have heard on albums and seen on YouTube, so I'm interested to hear what the Music Board sages think about them.

It was also a target rich environment considering I was the youngest guy in the room by at least a decade.

I've seen them in 4 decades. 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s. And I agree, they are damn good. They have been solid every concert except for around 03 I saw them. Ian's voice was hurting bad. If u notice in the past decade he has toned it down tremendously and it has certainly paid off. His voice is much crisper than it has been in years.

That's awesome. I would have loved to have seen them at their peak in the 80s-90s because Ian's voice is nothing short of electric. He was definitely taking it easy on a few of the harsher songs (Love Removal Machine, Wild Flower etc) but still brought serious energy to the whole performance.

Also, got a chance to experience it with my dad who was a huge fan of them when he was in college and passed the fandom on to me, so seeing him really get into was a huge plus as well.

I saw them open for Metallica in Biloxi in '89. They were pretty good. Then saw them play a free show at the old Band Shell down in Gainesville in '92. They absolutely blew the place away there. Incredible.

Exactly. He just channels his vocal energy different now. After Ceremony in 91', they got knocked down the music chain cause the grunge era started and The Cult was being thrown into the "Hair Band" group which they were not. I saw them twice in the 90's and the crowd was weak and not packed. I believe with the impact of social media and The Cult has certainly redefined themselves, they are in a good place.

good 3 part interview with Billy

I was at that show, too. They were good, but the Metallica crowd was definitely trying to rush them off the stage. Saw them a few years later in Nola with Lenny Kravitz opening for them, and they put on a great show.

Was at the show last night and have seen them many, many times. It was a good show with Love and Phoenix standing out. I can't remember a show where Ian was having more fun than last night. Billy and John are always rock solid.

I agree that they were stuck in a weird time after Sonic Temple. Music went to grunge and they didn't fit that it metal/hair. If the black sheep album comes out before ceremony they would have been more mainstream. Born into this was a great resurgence album that doesn't get enough credit. Choice and hidden are excellent. If you think about it, how many other bands that are their age are still making original music. 30+ years of original music. Yes they play the popular standards but still write and record new stuff. Pretty impressive. And they donut their way.

That is why they are a G.O.A.T.

Yeah, they rock still. I have seen them 3 times. I saw them in 2002 and they were at the top of their game. It was Astberry, Duffy, M. Sorum, and bassist Billy Morrison (former bandamte of Ian's during SDC) put on a hell of a show. I have also seem them in baton Rouge and Houston (first show was NOLA HOB). I think there was a 5th member playing rhythm, but he was standing afar.

Honestly, as long as it's Ian and Billy, it can be hired guns. The shows still rock...but Ian's voice only sounds like Ceremony-til today. That rocking, Brit new-wave voice he had on DreamTime and Love and even the more robust and Americanized Electric and Sonic Temple -- well, poof. Look at videos of the Cult from 1984 (Ian, Billy, J Stewart, and N fricking Preston) and compare it withe their coked out performances of 1988-1991. They were a better band when they were who they were. Fortunately, they are so gifted, they are just bad arse no matter what.

I saw that they were playing Shreveport this tour...a sure sign that this band is likely coming to an end with 1-2 tours max. BUT, hire some 25 year-olds to play rhythm and bass and drums and Ian and Billy will do this until they die.

Also, if you want the BEST of the Cult, the do NOT go see them as an opening act. Look up on Youtube their opening act for GNR and watch the lack of enthusiasm by the crowd. You'll get 8 songs at best and you know they'll play 2 new songs. The other 6 -- Love Removal Machine, Wildflower, She Sells Sanctuary, Rain, Fire Woman, and Lil' Devil. Meanwhile, if you see them as a full show, you get luckier.

Saw Ian as the front man for the Doors- Manzarek, Densmore and Robbie Krieger. It was in 2007, and it was freaking incredible!

Seen them in the 80's, 90's, 2000's, but not this decade yet. Ian's voice live has always been a struggle for him to sound like he does on his albums. The Sonic Temple tour he was struggling bc they had been on tour for like a year and it was shot. However, I saw them at house of blues in New Orleans around 2000 and that was the best he's ever sounded to me. 1987, The Cult at Seanger Theater with Guns-n-Roses opening is one of my favorite shows ever.

Haha. That's the exact sequence for me too.

Yeah I would say the fans were a bit restless. To be perfectly honest, I was so jacked up for Metallica that I wasn't really, really into The Cult that night either. In fact, I remember Astbury flipping off a fan down front as they were leaving the stage.

And next time I saw them was the same tour too. Kravitz opened in Gainesville but my buddy and I missed him. We got a bit of a late start leaving Jax and then pounded some beers after parking before going in.

Sonic Temple tour, Midsouth Coliseum in Memphis with Bonham and Tora Tora.

I won't say they were at the top of their game then, but still a damn fine show.
