If we're talking who the first rocker was I'll cast my vote for Louis Jordan.
He waxed stuff like this in 1945, this in 1946, this in 1947 and so on.
Now if you're talking the father of the self-contained rock band, where they're writing as well as performing, I could agree with that and have heard McCartney talk on the subject often. But as a performer and frontman everyone from Robert Plant to Freddie Mercury was channelling Elvis.

For me, it's Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry in that order.
Didn't get to "see" Holly, but danced with former wife in LA night club to Chucky!!! If any of you oldies recall "GeeGee Shin and the Boogie Kings" from the 60's. Chuck made a surprise visit to the club that is spoken of here when Shinn was performing. My what a night that was.
