The Band

Do they get any love on here? They are probably my #1 band and I dont see that changing anytime soon. The vocals of Danko, Manuel, and Helm are off the charts and produced so many good songs in a relatively short amount of time. They got their start as the backing band of Ronnie Hawkins but I think they got a lot of their sound from playing and recording with Dylan as well as where Robertson got his song writing ability.
Most of their better songs came off the first two albums, Music from Big Pink and The Band (Brown Album) but they had a handful on the later ones. While Helm sang lead on most of their hit songs such as The Weight and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, my favorite songs were sang by Danko and Manuel who put so much soul and feeling into every word.
Whispering Pines (Manuel)
It Makes No Difference (Danko)
When You Awake (Danko)
Rockin Chair (Manuel)
The Unfaithful Servant (Danko)
Tears of Rage (Manuel)
Music from Big Pink had a big influence on major artists from that period including Clapton, George Harrison and several others. So does anyone else love The Band as much as I do?

Their version of Atlantic City is better than Springsteen.
I agree, they nail it.

One of my favorite bands of all time. Was fortunate enough to see Levon Helm play the Ryman back in 2007. He absolutely killed it.
Thanks for bringing them up. Will probably throw "Rock of Ages" on the turntable later.

they are one of those groups that I think everyone loves. Just great songs and frick ton of them.
The Last Waltz is greatest "I am drinking at my house with friends, no sports and I dont want to play DJ" thing to put on.

Levon Helm is a top 25 American musician of all time. Totally unique and brilliant.

He really brought the southern style and sound to what is otherwise a Canadian born band. He had a huge influence on Robertson when he wrote songs.

The Band's behind-the-scenes story is almost as dysfunctional as CCR's. In the last few months I've read the bio by Barney Hoskyns, Levon's autobio, and the brand new book by Robbie Robertson. Levon was very bitter toward Robertson, both concerning song royalties/credits and the entire Last Waltz affair, which Levon actually grew to hate -- he considered the film a glorified screen test for Robbie to impress his Hollywood friends. Levon was even more acimonious toward RR in later interviews.
Robbie's book is quite mild in comparison, devoted mostly to namedropping and painting RR as just another Canadian Jew Indian good ole boy, all wide-eyed in wonder at the music legends, swimmin' pools, and movie stars. The allegedly hard-nosed maneuverer described by Levon and producer John Simon, among others, is never seen.
Just in time for Thanksgiving (the 40th anniversary):
The Last Waltz as you've never seen it: The Band and Friends, Full Concert, Winterland San Francisco (November 25, 1976)
This is the complete UNCUT video feed of The Last Waltz concert, all four hours and twenty minutes of it. See Abbeville's Bobby Charles (cut out of the movie) and enjoy staring at the coke booger in Neil Young's nose (rotoscoped out of the film version).

Definitely one of my favorite bands.
Levon's documentary on Netflix is pretty decent.

GOAT
Big Pink and self-titled are two of my all-time favorite records and Rock of Ages is one of my favorite live records.
Robbie Robertson is an a-hole.

I think it's the only dvd I've ever popped in for friends and said sit down, we're watching this while we drink.
