For those of you lucky bastards near one of these major cities.

why do so many bands skip the south?

Whigs we’re here last tour. Idk why they skipped this time. Dulli lives here so it’s not some bias.
Also, why are the Afghan Whigs so good? And so underrated ?

Shame they’ll probably only ever be remembered as a footnote in music history or some esoteric trivia question. I’ll probably be labeled a boomer, but Black Love is legit the last album I can think of as a masterpiece. Their sound has also evolved very well with the time—maintaining their classic sound while also growing with a new era. Not easy to accomplish in the downtrodden rock genre.

Randomly, about the whigs - they’re one of a handful of acclaimed bands I can think of that I have never heard once on siriusxm. I can’t think of any station that ever played them. Too early for grunge, too late for new wave. They really have their own niche. And really no one I know under 40 is aware of them. And yet The music they are churning out to this day is still superb.

Fixed, and it’s in my top five all time.

Im partial to Congregation...
Dulli hasn't lived in NOLA for a while (unless he recently moved back).. though he still had a piece of R Bar and Bud Rips... I think they were last in NOLA at OEJs in Sept 2022... I happened to be in town for a wedding that weekend and went after..

Ya I was there. Only show I ever caught at that venue. As for Dulli, isn’t checkpoint Charlie’s another one of his?

I actually pulled it out and played it after I posted that last night... within the first 20 seconds of Her Against Me... the missus stepped out from the back with... "Afghan Whigs.. Congregation.. great record!"

Man, I've seen plenty of people rate Gentlemen over Black Love, but how do people rate Congregation over Black Love? Black Love is like the polished, IMAX version of Congregation.
I think of it akin to Reservoir Dogs : Congregation :: Pulp Fiction : Black Love.

I like the rawer sound of Congregation... and it's probably more a point in time kinda thing... I was really into that record...
I dont even think I bought Black Love or anything after Gentleman.... I was probably just into a different sound at the time... I'm def familiar with it, because I had friends that were really into the AW and I saw them quite a few times and always enjoyed the shows.. most memorable being Thanksgiving night 1997 at the old Howlin Wolf... Kermit Ruffins opened the show and I think they played until 4am...

I’ve seen the Whigs a handful of times and that was by far the most memorable. They inexplicably took hours to come on stage and Dulli completely left the stage for a long spell (“to take a phone call”), leaving the band hanging to perform an impromptu improvisation. But when Dulli returned, he and the band worked that angry audience energy into madness, so by the time they launched into “Bulletproof,” the crowd was like a singular manic organism feeling and moving together. Was incredible to experience in person. I think there’s a bootleg of the show floating around.

Your second sentence is part of the answer. Also, order of exposure. Congregation was my first time hearing AW, and I loved it (thanks 120 Minutes and “Turn On the Water”). Then, Gentlemen blew me away. Don’t get me wrong, Black Love is a great record, but it would be third on my AW list.

your recall is much better than mine... I remember the delay and having a good time before running out of steam... but not those other specifics...
