Who gives a crap?

People who enjoy metal.

None of them hold a candle to bands that rocked just as hard but aren't considered metal like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and the Who.

I love Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. I also think The Who is one of the most talented groups ever. However, The Who are extremely overhyped in my opinion. In my opinion, they only really have three great albums.

Given their favorable status in rock history, I'd say that's not all that impressive when you look at other hard rock groups.

For many years I thought Metallica was the best metal band but I recently started listening to more Pantera and I think I'd have to give them the #1 spot instead.

In determining the "greatest metal band" should you evaluate whose best was best or who maintained the best quality throughout their career?

Because if it's the former then Metallica cannot be in contention due to the Load-St. Anger run. You could also argue that Pantera's pre-Power Metal career taints their legacy. People like to pretend that the band didn't even exist until the '90s but that's far from the truth.

Anthrax should round out the top 10 and I'd be okay with the list.

Personally, I'm not even sure if they are the fourth or fifth best thrash band. Sepultura's impact on the international scene cannot be understated. However, Anthrax has a pretty decent five album run to their name.

Mastadon should be on it.

They are quickly becoming a band comparable to Tool, meaning that they are not bound by labels. However, even their early "sludge metal" days were progressive metal as much as anything. They are a pretty impressive band nonetheless and have yet to put out any subpar material.

AC/DC -- I'll never understand how.

My favorite band, which was at one point the loudest and heaviest group on the planet. However, they are not metal in any sense.

Pantera
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Black Sabbath
Slayer

I think the genre lines drawn around the different distinctions of loud guitar based music are often absolutely idiotic. I love to bring up to "metal purists" that I own a Creem magazine from the late 70s that has a rundown of the then-current crop of "heavy metal" bands and brief flippant comments about each band. Included in the list: Boston, Heart, REO Speedwagon, Status Quo, Queen, etc. If I'm lying, I'm dying.

The upshot is that "heavy metal" as it came to be defined in later years bears almost no resemblance to the original idea of that kind of music and it has always been VERY blurry where one type of music becomes something else merely by the aspects of silly things like vocal delivery, frequency and complexity of guitar solos, whether one or more of the guitars used has a pointed headstock... all that stultifying kind of crap.

It's best to only refer to certain bands that typify a genre as being in that genre, but sorting out the ones that fall in between as belonging in one specific box or the other (and the life-draining argument over those distinctions) is a complete waste of time and thought.

IMO, of course.

Opeth should be higher, just my opinion though. Otherwise a pretty good list.

Yep, and the lack of Strapping Young Lad is pretty disappointing.
