So the fine people at MetalSucks.net have compiled a panel of heavy metal musicians and experts to rank the 25 greatest metal bands in existence.

The list has been highly scrutinized as of late, and for good reason.

The #1 spot is about to be revealed and it will obviously be Black Sabbath. Here is the remainder of the list for those who are curious:

25 Best Metal Bands of All-Time

1. Black Sabbath (assumed)
#2 - Iron Maiden (86 votes, 1635 Points)
#3 — Slayer (85 Votes, 1,571 Points)
#4 — Metallica (84 Votes, 1,486 Points)
#5 — Pantera (65 Votes, 1,052 Points)
#6 — Judas Priest (61 Votes, 997 Points)
#7 — Megadeth (64 Votes, 913 Points)
#8 — Death (57 Votes, 778 Points)
#9 — Motorhead (42 Votes, 622 Points)
#10 – Carcass (42 Votes, 516 Points)

#13 – Sepultura (41 Votes, 444 Points)
#14 – Dio (33 Votes, 433 Points)
#15 – Mercyful Fate (31 Votes, 419 Points)
#16 – Morbid Angel (33 Votes, 406 Points)
#17 – Meshuggah (32 Votes, 377 Points)
#18 – Opeth (30 Votes, 364 Points)
#19 – Testament (33 Votes, 347 Points)
#20 – At The Gates (28 Votes, 331 Points)
#21 – AC/DC (17 Votes, 313 Points)
#22 – Celtic Frost (24 Votes, 310 Points)
#23 – Ozzy Osbourne (21 Votes, 290 Points)
#24 – Napalm Death (22 Votes, 278 Points)
#25 – Lamb of God (29 Votes, 277 Points)

Some initial observations include:
-Slayer being ahead of Metallica

-Anthrax being ranked so high
-Cannibal Corpse being ranked so high
-AC/DC being ranked, but no Tool, Rush, Kiss, or Dream Theater
-Napalm Death being ranked at all

I hate that AC/DC is considered a metal band.

To be fair, most early metal artists cite them as being one of their biggest influences.

But you're right. As heavy as Back in Black was and is, it's still a classic hard rock album.

A few of theses I never heard of. Carcass??? Mercyful Fate??? Testament??? Celtic Frost????? Napalm Death?????

I have never been a fan of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer... seeing them there hurts me.

I get why they are there though totally.

But really NO TOOL?????????

Hard to argue with the Top 7 (although re-ordering might be needed for some) - after that, it gets really subjective, really quickly.

A number of groups fall into this category - Zeppelin (just a little, remember how early they were and how heavy the first couple of albums were), Def Leppard (don't laugh, High N' Dry is right at the line - particularly for its day - as heavy as any AC/DC album), Lamb of God on this list - really borderline to call them metal - on a list with Slayer, Morbid Angel, etc.

I'm surprised Napalm Death isn't higher.

without question. their ep-empire years were fantastic. few bands put together a string of releases as strong as those.

i'd have to add accept to that list as well.

Carcass

A British death metal band that began the melodic death metal trend that Swedish group At The Gates would eventually perfect. Their lyrics are highly intelligent and their song structures are pretty elaborate. However, they only released two worthwhile albums.

quote:

Mercyful Fate

The Danish band that originally made extreme metal vocalist King Diamond famous. Along with Venom, they helped launch black metal. Diamond's immense falsetto vocals have always been difficult to access for most metal fans, but their guitar work is superb. Lars Urlich of Metallica absolutely loves them. Their first two albums are considered some of the greatest metal releases ever.

quote:

Testament

The biggest band to break out of the San Francisco thrash metal scene not named Metallica. Most thrash fans consider them more suitable for the Big 4 label than Anthrax. Their first four albums are thrash masterpieces and they deserve every bit of respect they receive.

quote:

Celtic Frost

Part of the first wave of black metal along with Bathory. Their lyrics are blasphemous and their musicianship is somewhat mediocre compared to most other bands on the list. However, this Swiss trio's theatrics made them a well-established name throughout the underground tape-trading world.

quote:

Napalm Death

Founders of grindcore. Translation: pure noise and chaos. Although they helped give rise to other extreme metal bands and genres, I consider them to be extreme punk more than anything. Jim Carrey has a pretty funny bit about them (he was a big grindcore and death metal fan).

If AC/DC is metal, so is Accept (probably more so).

Zeppelin (just a little, remember how early they were and how heavy the first couple of albums were)

As heavy and influential as Zeppelin was, their sound never became 'metallic' (e.g. Black Sabbath). Down-tuned guitars are usually one of the most distinct qualities of the heavy metal sound, and the early hard rock bands typically played in standard tuning.

quote:

Def Leppard (don't laugh, High N' Dry is right at the line - particularly for its day - as heavy as any AC/DC album)

I agree, they were part of the NWOBHM as much as anyone. However, they sold out on Pyromania and fell in line with pop metal in the subsequent years. Joe Elliot's vocals have always been too clean for my taste. It's for that same reason why I never liked Dokken.

Lamb of God on this list - really borderline to call them metal - on a list with Slayer, Morbid Angel, etc.

I disagree with this immensely. They are considered to be one of the biggest names in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. They are sort of like Machine Head: a groove/thrash derivative which some refer to as "post-metal". The Adlers are household names in the metal community and Blythe's vocals are as powerful as any singer's in the last 15 years.

If ever there was a progressive metal band to make this list it should be Queensryche. Most of the voters showed a general favoritism towards black, death, and thrash metal, and a dislike for power and prog metal.

The more time passes, the more I feel like they can't be classified in any particular genre. They have transcended labels at this point.

I don't disagree with their being classified this way - they just don't fit with the list (any more than AC/DC, does)

Again, don't disagree with these comparisons - but it's "something else" - I mean, Tool is one of my favorite "heavy" bands, but they're "something else" - I'm not sure they would belong on this list. Stuff like Lamb of God and Machine Head are on the list of bands I recognize as capable, innovative and even influential, but not my cup of tea.

ETA: And Pyromania is my favorite album, brah.

I love Restless and Wild and Balls to the Wall, but there are probably, at minimum, 25 other bands I would consider more influential and better all-around.

Hell, you could argue that they're not even the best metal band from Germany.

Pretty solid list. Would move up Ozzy and Lamb of God, and move down Death and Carcass.

If you disregard AC/DC, I think Lamb of God fits the list just fine.

The list isn't limited to classic heavy metal (e.g. Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, etc.), because it obviously includes some of the music's most extreme subgenres. Heck, Napalm Death is arguably the least metal of any band listed.
