Great show .All those great and quirky-smart melodies. He has this unique combination of lush and stark that is difficult to explain. But it works. He focused on Carrie and Lowell and then did some older cuts towards the end including Casimir Pulaski Day, Futile Devices, Chicago, Concerning the UFO sighting near Highland , Illinois, etc... The stage and lighting were really great too. It was a very restrained performance as concerts go, more contemplative than rah-rah, not exuberant but really cool because his audience really gets and appreciates him. Hipsters, hipsters everywhere. More ironic beards than The State should allow. Would enthusiastically see again . To go with my 16 year old Sufjan-adoring daughter and her friends made it even more special.

Agreed! Fantastic show. Such a beautiful vocalist. I was impressed. No kidding about the hipsters. But I will give them props for watching quietly and attentively...and there weren't many phones up in the air.
Sufjan was way more lively than I figured. I guess his mostly sappy music made me assume he was just a quiet depressed person, which wasn't the case at all. I laughed when he joked about playing Chicago last bc it was the only upbeat song in his catalog.
We also spotted Winn and Regine Butler from Arcade Fire enjoying the show!

Great show musically and visually. The sound was absolutely incredible in the Saenger. The Carrie and Lowell stuff was good, but I'm glad he threw in some older stuff. It made the show a lot better for me. He's a funny guy and I was glad he started story telling at the end. Sister and Blue Bucket of Gold were the highlights for me.

I'm seeing him tomorrow night. Good to hear that he still puts on a great show. Can't wait!
How was the opener? How long did he play for?

His name was Moses Sumney. Great singer (kinda like Jeff Buckley). Did about 5-6 songs with lots of looping. Very talented dude.

Seaward, what did you think of the show?

Show was good last night. It was pretty toned down compared to the last 2 shows I've been to. I liked the imagery and the sound was excellent. I was on the 3rd row, right in front of one of the big speaker stacks. It didn't bother me, but the spacey outro for Blue Bucket of Gold made me feel like I was taking off in a space shuttle. There was so much bass, my whole body was shaking . I felt like an old timer because I had to plug my ears, it was so damn loud.
We didn't get to hear Chicago, which was a bummer, but it's good that he seems to mix up the set. He played all of Carrie and Lowell, and a few from Seven Swans, Michigan, and Illinois. He also did Futile Devices.
He didn't say a word until almost all of the Carrie and Lowell material was played. Then he told stories from his childhood for about 10-15 minutes. I knew he had a strange upbringing, but some of the stuff he said was just hilarious. I recorded most of it on my phone.

I really enjoyed it. Thought it was really well done. It was probably a little too mellow and depressing to be amongst my favorite shows ever though. I typically enjoy seeing upbeat, fun, loud music more live. That’s why Chicago was easily my favorite song of the night, it just seemed like such a release after all the prior stuff. I did think it was a good idea to make some of the Carrie and Lowell songs a little bigger live with the added instrumentation. I still think Carrie and Lowell is an absolute masterpiece (quite possibly his best album, AOTY easily so far, top 5 this decade, etc.), but I was a little worried how well it would translate live with just him and his guitar/piano.

That sounds like he played pretty much the same show as he did in New Orleans. Songs and stage banter were just like you described.

I agree. I wish I would have caught the Illinois tour. That looks like it was amazing. The Adz tour was pretty awesome though. Much more energy in those songs. But it was kind of the same deal as this tour. He played most of Adz first (Impossible Soul was AWESOME), then played a similar set of songs from his other albums. I hope that someday he does a generic tour instead of an album supporting tour. It'd be great to here a more eclectic set.
