As far as I know (I'm also a huge fan of his) he has never expressed a longing to be accepted in mainstream country music. From my understanding, he seems to be quite content (and has even expressed this) with being the antithesis to mainstream country. I think he is simply saying that they only give a shite about artists like Merle, himself, and Isbell when they can capitalize off of their success. Or, in the case of Merle Haggard, exploit his death for their own profit.

As far as the business side. The man has said multiple times in interviews that he will make the music that he wants, even if it affects his "status". I think he fully gets that he could go the way of FGL and make more money ore be "accepted by the masses". Maybe I'm misunderstanding your meaning in this statement.

That's just the sad state of the record business today. They didn't give a frick, still don't give a frick and never will give a frick about the legends.

frick all of those guys.

There was no place for Merle Haggard or the kind of music that he created in Nashville mainstream country music. Now, Nashville is attempting to cash in on his name and reputation that has resurfaced in the news cycle because of his death. People are remembering him and his music and Nashville wants to piggyback on that development not because of the music, which they ignored, but because of the money and viewership. To them, it is all about the cash, not about the music, and Sturgill Simpson is calling them out on it.

All of this.

Pet peeve time now. I'm really tired of organizations waiting until legends die before creating some award in their name. I bitched about this when the NFL created the Deacon Jones award for the sack leader, when Deacon was barely in the ground. shite, he'd been retired for 40 years. Did they think he would make a comeback?

According to my sources, it was right after a record executive told him that "Kern River" was a bad song.

Well we all knew he was mistaken. My favorite Haggard song. I particularly like this simple version.

Good God how could anyone, especially someone in the music business, think that was a bad song?

What a poor judge of music that person was. And Nashville is infested with them.

It's embarrassing how bad some of the popular country songs are today. It reminds me of this article I think was posted here a few months ago.

Wait until David Allen Coe or Willie Nelson passes away. Then he's really let em have it. C&W music has been a joke for the last 20 years. There is nothing new here. So sad.
