I can't wait for the response tomorrow when I post Stereogum's 40 best rap albums of 2014. The cries of "hipsterism" will be deafening.

The omission of...Opeth is pretty glaring

Why?
The new Opeth album is not metal. I really like it, but since Heritage, they've mellowed quite a bit. More prog than anything else.

Good point. Though, that being said, the write up at the beginning discusses how hard it is to define metal any longer.

By the way, found this gem from the list. I'm not sure I'd say that it's the best metal song of the year.. but damn it is good.

quote:

18. Sivyj Yar - From The Dead Villages' Darkness (Avant Garde Music)
In June's Black Market, I wrote about the Sivyj Yar song "Distant Haze Was Arising," the centerpiece track on the rural Russian one-man black metal band's latest album. We named that song the best metal track of that month, and now that the year is over, I'd argue "Distant Haze Was Arising" is the best metal song that came out in 2014, period. It's incredible -- a heartstring-pulling, sweeping atmospheric stunner that's as close to perfect as possible.

These types of songs are what I really like about metal. They move from place to place and incorporate a lot of different emotions. They take you places, mixing equal parts awe-inspiring riffage, crushing blasts, and beautiful melodies.

Other than the doom type stuff, I've decided that I really like metal that has a heavy post-rock influence. Or maybe metal influenced post-rock. Anyway.. whatever.
