As I have become older, my hearing is definitely not what it use to be. Too many years of driving a Jeep Wrangler and having to crank up the volume of my stereo to hear it. With that said, I have recently started playing some of my older albums again. My wife talked me into getting rid of my huge speakers that I had with my system about 20 years ago. For years I had the stereo play through the speaker system that was pre-wired in our house. It was okay and I didn't expect a lot. To improve the sound I decided to connect it to a surround sound system with a subwoofer that I have. I never really use the system for anything, but thought it would be great for music. I guess I have either lost a lot of my ability to hear certain frequencies or I have a crappy surround sound system. Probably a combination of both. It isn't too much better than what I hear in the Jeep. Are there places that sell good quality stereo equipment anymore? What brands or models would you recommend?

surround sound
From someone who has been rockin' loud music for four decades, allow me to gently say "there's your problem".

Keep it simple. A powerful system, paired with good speakers tuned into a carefully-matched listening environment, still beats all. My two JBL 4411's are approaching 35+ years old, and I still get great pleasure from them. Might have to crank the volume a bit more now and then, but so what?

We actually have a thread dedicated to this topic. Lots of good info in there and you can post in there to get the answers you are looking for.

Here is the thread LINK

The answer to your question is yes, but it depends on where you live. You can always order something l, but it's nice to audition speakers before buying.

Bose speakers pack a lot of whollop for the size and price IMO.

I got rid of my old 301s about 5 years ago. I loved those freakin things and wish I had held on to them.
