You give Black Flag too much credit.

Minor Threat and the Minutemen over Black Flag. All day. All day.

Its just my opinion. I was speaking more of genre defining mainstream success which is why i think these two bands are comparable. Look up the word pioneer and get back to me. Black Flag is punk garbage. Indie /=/ punk as much as you would like it to. I think Sonic Youth was more responsible for todays sound than the pixies in the 80s but thats just my opinion.

To listen to? Sure. I f'n love the Minutemen. they are one of my all-time favorite bands, and I think the death of D Boon is one of the greatest tragedies to befall pop music. He was genius.

But Black Flag, at the time, was far more popular, and they were the band who really opened up the indie touring circuit by playing literally anywhere they could. They were the pioneers that made the rest of the indie scene possible.

But, yeah, outside of Damaged and Six Pack, I wouldn't really want to sit around and listen to their music. Flag's definitely a band that's easier to appreciate their influence without, ya know, listening their albums. Also, Greg Ginn is one of the biggest assholes in the history of music. He's such an a-hole, he makes Henry Rollins look like the reasonable one.

Sonic Youth was on SST. They were absolutely a punk band. They came out of the post-hardcore scene and also part of the No Wave scene, which gave us industrial heavyweights like Helmet and Big Black (also punk bands, BTW). No wave lives on in bands like the Swans. Also, heavily punk-influenced.

Indie rock, hate to break it to you, comes out of punk. they are practically inseperable. Even REM was originally classified as "post-punk" band and came out of the punk scene.

I like their two songs, too.

Also, don't forget the Love Ways and Soft Effects EPs from Spoon... great! Sure they started to dip in quality and got more formulaic after Kill The Moonlight, but those first few records were great!

And come on, the two singles ... Agony Of Lafitte and Lafitte Don't Fail Me Now... after Elektra dropped them are classics..

Then again, I like MM okay too..

I'd say the comparison is that they are both bands with indie rock roots, that have experienced mainstream success, from approx the same time frame... i think by and large, you are appealing to a common fanbase..

Meh. I prefer Gray Matter.

RE: Egg Hunt. I just love the slow, brooding groove of Me and You. It could just keep going and going and going.

Yeah, I agree with you. If you find a Modest Mouse record in someone's collection, there's a better than even money chance you'll also find a Spoon record. There is a lot of crossover in their fanbases. I don't think it's crazy to compare the two bands at all. But I also agree the difference in the bands comes down to personal preference. They are both great bands, and you should own their records because they are great.

See, I just love Guy Piccotto. Rites of Spring just seemed like it was always veering just out of control. While we're name checking Dischord bands, which I'm totally down for (Dag Nasty is indeed awesome), Nation of Ulysses is outstanding.

James Canty is also the best DC musician who went from drumming in an hugely influential group to being the lead guitarist in another band (NOU to the Pharmacists). Suck on that, Dave Grohl.

I was about to order a copy of the reissue of Slant 6's Soda Pop * Rip Off, when the missus pulled out a copy of an original from her collection... we had a moment...

It is full of catchy guitar riffs... some are vaguely familiar, nothing ground breaking.. but its just a fun, easy listen... you can put it on and let it play through..

For Christmas season, we're not allowed to open packages not addressed to ourselves, to keep the surprise for the holiday. That said, a few days ago, there was a massive package from Dischord addressed to my wife.

It's gonna be a merry Christmas. (I like how this thread has become the old, bitter punk hangout... someone put on some GG Allin or Johnny Thunders)

My SK set had an autographed single in it. I have tickets to see them in both Austin and Dallas.

That's what Modest Mouse and Spoon have in common... neither are as great as Sleater-Kinney.
