I know that the first person on my Mt. Rushmore would be Robert Johnson

Oh, another interesting guy that probably is on no one's radar

Stephen Foster

The man basically created America's musical identity coming into the 20th century.

Rolling stone ranked prince top 35 as a guitarist, vocalist, and artist ... May I like rs, may not like prince, but that's impressive ...

Sorry, he was talented, but not really a given at all.

"Solo artists only"

Out.

James Brown was a great showman, but he borrowed heavily from many others

Is this a serious statement? There isn't an artist who was both as influential is he was in his time while also being equally relevant to post modern music.

JB is the Godfather of hip hop, funk and soul. While a Mt Rushmore is nearly impossible to do, he is definitely on it if youre going to boil everything down to 4 individuals/groups.

Pretty hilarious to me that anyone would try and downplay him as just a showman while putting Elvis on the list. That's the very definition of Elvis and not even close for JB.

Did you see Elvis on my list? No you didn't. You won't find anyone on my list, that at least isn't a writer,Singer, and musician. Those are the only things that will qualify for me. I don't care about any of the other aspects.

You don't think James Brown borrowed from people like Howling Wolf, Bo Diddley, and Others?

Ok

My original thinking in limiting to solo artists was that transformational bands (like the Beatles) would have their own separate monuments. The Beatles collectively had an impact like no other, agreed.

totally disagree. He is finally being recognized and celebrated for the complete artist that he was. People are learning that he played an incredible number of instruments, was a prolific writer, had significantly better than average voice with solid range and a distinctive sound and a stage presence that rivals anyone else's.

If you want to limit it to the biggest names in American music, then my list would be something like:

John Phillip Souza
Louis Armstrong
George Gershwin
Elvis Presley

Prince, Michael Jackson and Bob Dylan don't come close to having the cultural impact to justify ignoring pre-rock n' roll musicians. I'd include someone representing blues, country, bluegrass, Broadway, opera, spiritual/gospel and folk before I'd select multiple rock artists.

If we are talking American rock/ pop music:

Elvis
Jimi
Michael

Arguments can be made for everyone else, even though Prince is definitely on the short list along with Dylan, James Brown...and Stephen fricking Foster and Frederic fricking Chopin.

Mercury is a great call.

Except this violates your "no bands" caveat.

Certainly a talent worthy of consideration, but Mercury's relevant work was all with Queen.

The same could be true of Hendrix with The Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Band of Gypsies.

McCartney had a solid solo career, as well as with Wings, but, likewise, everything he did to warrant inclusion on this hypothetical monument was with "The Beatles."

For "solo" artists within the Rock/Pop/Soul/R&B/Blues era - from ~1950 to the present:

Chuck Berry

Elvis Presley

Ray Charles (and, no the "Raelettes" don't count)

Aretha Franklin

Hon Mention:

Prince (not sure who I'd bump from the Top 4 to include him - maybe Chuck Berry - but he is close, and so are the following -)

Buddy Holly

Little Richard

Jerry Lee Lewis

Johnny Cash

Stevie Wonder

Michael Jackson

Any list like this that doesn't include the Beatles is just stooooopid.

If we're talking individuals, a list of the greatest four pop/rock performers in history is a relatively easy call:

Michael Jackson
Paul McCartney
Mick Jagger
Elvis Presley

Solo artists only:

Michael Jackson
Elvis Presley
Bob Dylan
tossup: Stevie Wonder or Prince.

Madonna would certainly be in the top 10.
