The Who - You Better, You Bet

"...to the sound of old T-Rex, and Who's Next"

Referencing T-Rex and themselves - nice.

Kanye West:

I bet me and RayJ could be friends.
Only problem is we fricked the same bitch.
Only difference is I'm rich.

It's a brilliant lyric that simultaneously insults RayJ, Kanye, his wife, Kim, their child, their relationship, and their lifestyle.

I don't think he meant to do that in purpose.

Donald Fegan references Dave Brubeck on his first solo album.

I hear you're mad about Brubeck, like your eyes I like him too.
He's an artist, a pioneer
We've got to have some music on the New Frontier.

Built to Spill - Distopian Dream Girl references an artist and an album

quote:

My stepfather looks
Just like David Bowie but he hates David Bowie
I think Bowie's cool
I think Lodger rules, my stepdad's a fool

Fagen (with Steely Dan) also name checks The Eagles in "Everything You Did" -

quote:

Turn up The Eagles, the neighbors are listening.

It was a friendly feud, as they shared Irving Azoff as manager. The Eagles responded, somewhat famously, with the line from Hotel California:

quote:

They stab it with their Steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast.

Worked in radio with a guy who said Hank Williams, Jr. was in a three-way tie with Bo Diddley and Jerry Lee Lewis for most times mentioning themselves in their own songs.

ETA 'tie'

David Allen Coe has to be the winner here.

That might qualify as one of the first rap songs as well.

Public Enemy -- Bring The Noise -- "Wax is for Anthrax"

Also a song by metal group Heaven in the 80's:
In The Beginning
This one names a bunch of groups. At least eight.

Side note about In The Beginning. In the movie Easy Money, when Monty and the boys are parking at the racetrack and get cut off and their spot stolen by some young punks, the punks are playing the song. Got a kick out of that when I realized it way back then. Actually found it on youtube too:
