Noticed the Neil Young "Southern Man" post and that someone had already referenced the famous reply from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama".

quote:

Well I heard mister Young sing about her.
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down.
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember.
A Southern man don't need him around, anyhow.
Another song that references a song that I bet most people haven't noticed is "Train in Vain" by The Clash -

quote:

You say you stand by your man
Tell me something I don't understand
You said you love me and that's a fact
And then you left me, said you felt trapped

Well some things you can explain away
But the heartache's in me till this day

Did you stand by me
No, not at all
Did you stand by me
No way

This has to be a reply to Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man".

Can anybody think of any others?

Walk of Life and Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits both reference songs. The Beatles did this a lot with their own songs. Crocodile Rock by Elton John

Dream Theater's Octavarium makes a ton of references to other songs, bands, actors, etc.

Specifically these two sections.

quote:

Spoken: Isn't this where we came in? sailing on the seven seize the day tripper diem's ready jack the ripper owens wilson phillips and my supper's ready lucy in the sky with diamond dave's not here I come to save the day for nightmare cinema show me the way to get back home again

Example 1

quote:

flying off the handle with careful with that axe eugene gene the dance machine messiah light my fire gabba gabba hey hey my my generation's home again

Example 2

In terms of sheer numbers, this may be the all time champ:

Dave Edmunds - "Boys Talk"

See if you count all the song titles mentioned

For mentions of artists rather than songs, this may be hard to beat:

Reunion - "Life Is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)" (1974

I believe this made the pop top 10

I'm not sure why... But the first one that popped in to my head was Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight" which refrences The Ronette's "Be My Baby"

It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels by Kitty Wells was in reference/response to Hank Thompson's The Wild Side of Life.

Marty Robbins referenced his own song El Paso twice - first in Faleena From El Paso that tells the story from her view - and again in El Paso City.

There are others I am sure. And tons where another artist is referenced.

Bob Dylan's song "Sara" about his wife, says point blank that he did in fact write "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for her.

Camera Obscura's "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" is a response to Lloyd Cole and the Commotions' "Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken?" Go figure.

Regina Spektor - On the Radio

Chorus 1:
quote:

On the radio
We heard November Rain
That solo's real long
But it's a pretty song
You listen to it twice
'cause the DJ was asleep
On the radio

Chorus #2
quote:

On the radio
You'll hear November Rain
That solo's awful long
But it's a good refrain
You'll listen to it twice
'cause the DJ is asleep
On the radio!
On the radio!
