Some interesting Jason Isbell news, articles, and interviews...

Gonna combine a bunch of shite into one thread... And many on here know my love for isbell is pretty strong to say the least. 
Glad to see he is really gaining big time attention these days. For those that seem to want to compare Southeastern and Something More than Free and talk about how they are different and one is better than the other, my first thought is those are probably the only albums you have heard by him. My second thought is you really need to listen to his other albums because that is one of the most amazing things about him to me is his diversity.
Anyway... on to the articles and interviews...

Honestly, I don't think this latest album is Isbell's best album, I'd still have to say that is Southeastern.... but, I do think it is really great. However, for anyone just comparing this one and southeastern you are REALLY missing out on some of the great songs on Sirens of the Ditch, Jason Isbell & the 400 unit, and Here We Rest... along with the stuff he did with Drive By Truckers....
The guy has been writing great songs for nearly 15 years now, don't just listen to the albums that came after he had enough followers to make the media give him attention. This guy had the number one album in folk, indie, rock, and country, and you'd be lucky to hear his songs on the radio.... that's a pretty amazing cult following. It didn't happen overnight. He has had a big following for a long time because of past songs, not just the last two albums.

Got tickets to see him at the Ryman on October 25, then found out he was gonna be in huntsville, al on Oct 2 with John Prine.... so now I'm going to both.

Can you give me some recommendations of songs to check out? I like the guy, I like his style... but I'm really into old blues, instrumental jazz, and some jazzy hip hop stuff.

Honestly, I like almost all his songs.. but based on what you like you might wanna check out The Blue, No Choice in the Matter, TVA, Chicago Promenade, Hurricanes and Hand Grendades, Sunstroke... Dress Blues and of course God damn lonely love... Those are some of his slower more blues type songs off the top of my head.
Honestly, almost all his songs are pretty good in one form or another, but he can be very diverse...

It's strange, but the Goddamn Lonely Love... I think I heard it one night a long time ago, like '08, when I was real drunk on Jack and I turned it off before I teared up.

It's been around awhile, he did it with DBT years ago... early 2000's. Although his songs sound diverse, they are all pretty depressing.
some others you might wanna check out are streetlights and cigarettes and wine... honestly when I want to try to get someone to listen to isbell the hardest thing is trying to pick what song to tell them to listen to...
He has some great military songs like Soldiers get strange, dress blues, and tour of duty.

Saw that CBS story earlier today...good stuff. Just a real likeable guy who writes really great songs.

The cool thing is when some of the traditional country fans fire up Isbell on Pandora or Spotify radio and start discovering all the other good acts out there. I had a guy ask me if I'd heard of this guy, Hayes Carll, recently. He heard him on Isbell Pandora. On the flip side, hopefully with his chart success these services won't start including the Nashville crap on his "stations".

That's a big change from not too long ago and likely goes a long way towards his success (if you consider his writing to be superb the whole way). He's likely starting to earn a lot of second chances from previously burned bridges

I know that all three nights of his are sold out at the Ryman, but Im going to try and get tickets to the Oct 26 show. Chris Stapelton is opening that night.
