However, without taking anything away from their break through album I feel that musically and lyrically Wish You Were Here and Animals were better (Though neither had a commercial hit like Money.) Probably because the best songs on the latter LP's were not condensed enough for regular air play.

Anyway, btw thinking of going catch Roger Waters "Us and Them" at the Smoothie Center. Anyone seen his shows recently? Worth it? Looks pretty good on the YouTube videos i've seen.

I'll be there! Evidently not enough old dudes buying tickets--still lots of seats available.

I liked Animals more back in the day too. And "Money", possibly BECAUSE it had a lot of airplay, was always my least favorite song. I skip it every time I play this album, and I think it even breaks the flow of the music.

I agree, it seems forced onto that album.

Before I first heard the Ramones/Sex Pistols/Elvis Costello and became a punk in my late teens, I was a yuuuuge Floyd fan.

Of all their albums, WYWH is the only one I've listened to all the way through more than once in the last 40 years or so, and remains one o my all time favorites, despite that it's about as far from traditional guitar-based rock as anything they've ever done.

I think I'm drawn to it more than the others because it seems more genuinely heartfelt and "real" than the rest of their catalog - perhaps because it's about an actual relationship with a real human being, and not a fictional character like most of Waters/Gilmour's other works.

I think Dark Side of the Moon is my favorite. I was born a few years after it was released but recall listening to it in high school with friends and adding it to the never-ending debate of 'Best Album of All-Time'.

In college, I tried the Wizard of Oz thing and was immediately convinced it was intentional. Most of my friends doubted it to different extents. I watched again (search Youtube for Dark Side of the Rainbow) recently completely sober and now more convinced than ever.

The Great Gig in the Sky synched to the tornado scene is all of the evidence I need. I read the wiki page about this song recently and describes how the female vocalist was brought in suddenly during the latter stages of production. Alan Parsons recommended her and they 'coached' her on the type of singing they wanted. She did three takes and then they combined them for the final version of the song. I don't think she knew anything about The Wizard of Oz thing and I'm not sure if all of the PF members knew.

Parsons has claimed that he tried watching and did not see much of a connection, pointing out only the balancing act by Dorothy. The leads me to believe that he was deeply involved with the 'project' and is attempting to defer speculation.

Or maybe God had something to do with it. The album is divine whether or not there is The Wizard of Oz aspect. It's about life, death, time passing you by, and also happens to have beautiful instruments and varied sounds throughout.

It's great, of course, but doesn't have my favorite Pink Floyd songs. "Fearless" is my favorite Pink Floyd song, and it is on Meddle. Also love the early stuff with Syd. The first guitar riff on Astronomy Domine gives me chills.

Well, it's not simply popular opinion: it's the 3rd biggest-selling album in the history of the planet, it was on the Billboard albums charts for 741 weeks spanning from 1973-1988, and accomplished so much in expanding Pink Floyd's appeal to a greater audience. Let's describe it this way: Pink Floyd probably doesn't get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame without Dark Side, that's how influential it is. Remaining opinions are clearly subjective.

1. No
2. Your penchant for referring to things like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Rolling Stone's Greatest Albums list is a bad look

Doesn't this define popular opinion?

my experience is that yuuuuuuge pink floyd fans just haven't been exposed to other stuff. I am not saying Pink floyd doesn't have awesome stuff, they do! But they aren't the end all be all.

My two favorite PF albums are meddle and wish you were here.

DSOTM is a solid album, but give me the other two any day. Of course, you throw meddle on with yuuuuuugggeee pink floyds album and they aren't happy. They will listen to DSOTM, The Wall, momentary lapse of reason and MAYBE animals.

Indeed. The Wall is better as well. DSOTM is a very good album, but I find it doesn't achieve the greatness of these three. I rank them as:

Animals
The Wall
WYWH
DSOTM

Is this some sort of pissing contest to determine who's the truest PF fan? You "Meddle is the GOAT" people seem to be more contentious to show your coolness for liking their earlier, pre-popular stuff than actual fans. How can I tell? By this pretentious statement of yours.

Here's your reality check: Piper to Meddle era is completely different to Dark Side to Division Bell. You basically have two different bands in sound. Early Floyd is a raw, acid sound; whereas, the post Syd Floyd is a grand, psychadelic sound.

My point is that one could absolutely be a yuuuuuuuuge Floyd fan and not really care for the pre DSOTM records. That does not make them any less of a fan. That would be like calling Metallica fans who dislike everything post Black Album not real fans.

Stop being a pretentious prick.

(as qualification of my post, Lucifer Sam is one of my favorite Floyd songs. Does that make me a "true fan" and grant me credibility? I sure hope so, sir! That would be swell!)

PF doesn't have a Best album. It all depends on personal preference.

Mine is Animals and its not even close. It's my opinion that dogs is the greatest song ever written. But I know to there who feel differently.

Atom Heart Mother is my second favorite.

I know one kid who things Echoes Live and Pompeii is the greatest thing ever recorded.

No Gilmour, no care. Waters wrote the music, but he didn't sing it or play it.

We think alike. Animals is a top 5 favorite record of mine, and Dogs is tied for my all time favorite song (My Morning Jacket 'Steam Engine' is the other)

I don't really buy into that. yea art is subjective and all, but there is no denying creative talent and musical structure.

DSOTM was their first great leap technically and creatively but they built on that with WYWH and Animals, and The Wall. After The Wall they changed directions somewhat and moved toward more poppy area (Though never straying very far from who they had become post Barrett.) Until the Waters finally left completely and Gilmore was able to assume total control. IMO there are 3 distinctive Pink Floyd bands. (Syd's Floyd) (Waters Floyd) and Gilmore's Floyd) Syd's being the most different as was stated above.

Anyway good conversation though.
