Had a discussion the other day that Buck Owens- together again is acutely a sad song. The reason the music doesn't match the lyrics because the guy knows that it won't last or he's trying to convince himself they are back together

The thing about sad songs is that, when all hope is gone, they just say so much

Surely one of Jason Molina's projects has been mentioned in here, but if not this one is a favorite of mind from the Songs: Ohia 'Didn't it Rain' album.

Jason Molina wrote some truly depressing, but gorgeous, songs about death and his struggles with alcoholism. An all time favorite artist of mine. RIP.

Songs Ohia: Blue Factory Flame

And a "saddest song" list can't be complete without an elliott smith track. so here's one of my favorites from him.

Elliott Smith - Pitseleh

And finally, this bruiser..

Devendra Banhart - I Remember

Lots of great sad songs of all genres in this thread, but I have to say that the one that had the saddest impact on me when I first heard it was George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” Also had the pleasure of seeing him perform it in concert shortly before he passed away.

I've posted this before in this type of thread in this forum. Now take notice.

Snow...fills the fields we used to know
And the little park where we would go
Lies far below in the snow
Gone...it's all over and you're gone
But the memory lives on
Although our dreams lie buried
In the snow
Sometimes the wind blows
Through the trees
And I think I hear you calling me
But all I see is snow
Everywhere I go
As the cold winter sun sinks low
I walk alone through the snow

Sorry, that sounds really arrogant. It's a fantastic song, though.
