Same Auld Lang Syne, Dan Fogelberg. It will frick you up on Christmas Eve, especially if you have someone you think "what might have been," about. LINK

"Just for a moment I was back at school and felt that old familiar pain. And as I turned to make my way back home, the snow turned into rain." Holy frick. That will make you look at your hole card.

"I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" - Hank Williams

Elvis Presley said it was the saddest song he'd ever heard.

This one gets me every time.

I tear up like a little girl. It's downright Pavlovian.

May not be the saddest, but it's definitely one of the bleakest.

Yesterday When I Was Young - Roy Clark

ETA...

Daddy Doesn't Pray Anymore - (the Chris Stapleton version is awesome...but I will always go back to the James King version as my go to)

Daddy Doesn't Pray Anymore

I didn't realize until recently that Stapleton actually wrote it (about his father), but didn't record it until a few years back after his father passed.

"Weathered faces lined in pain, are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand" is one of my favorite lyrics.

Luka is super depressing.
Elephant is the saddest song in at least the last ten years.
Ryan Adams has a few on his newest album, but To Be Without You is tough.

The most heartbreaking song I know is "Cause I Love You" by former Tower of Power lead vocalist Lenny Williams. This song is so poignant.

Also "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins. Listen to the lyrics!

This song gets lumped in with 80’s cheese, but it is a very good ballad. It coupled with the movie of the same name were huge in 1983(?).

"Weakness in Me" by Joan Armatrading LINK

"Long, Long Time" by Linda Ronstadt. LINK

"Everything I Own" by David Gates (about his father passing away). LINK

All fairly old songs, but they'll get you where it hurts.

Here's a version by Johnny Cash that's pretty damn good. Nothing like sitting around a campfire drinking a beer listening to this.
