Most Priest fans may not put this album in their top 5, however, this album is one of their best. Most people would put Screaming for Vengeance and British Steel as the top albums and rightfully so. But having listened to Sad Wings of Destiny, it's hard for me not to put it up there with these two.

Hard to believe The Ripper was recorded in 1975. They don't get enough credit for doing innovative things so early. Think of how different The Ripper sounds from Black Sabbath - yet only 5-7 years removed.

That album is innovative in so many ways. You hear elements of the heavy metal, progressive metal, some blues, and what eventually became the NWOBHM sound. They were the earliest to meld all of these together, plus they were pioneers of the dual guitar sound, along with Thin Lizzy.

quote:All true. It's weird, because over time, Priest has become, for me, an example of a great band that stopped taking risks and produced a lot of filler. The drumming ceased being interesting at all by the early 80's. And the production wasn't great (until Painkiller). But they were really important.

Huh? Probably one of the more important heavy metal albums ever.

That Metal Show Top 5
This is Eddie Trunk and his crew. Not only did they collectively leave Sad Wings of Destiny out of their top 5, none of them picked it for their personal top 5. Point proven.

That day in 1976 when I opened this album and had my first listen, it was like no other heavy metal I had ever heard. Sabbath had been the high mark and the only music I could compare it too was the Trapeze Medusa album. Man those two Flying Vee's and Halford's wailing vocals are still magic for me.
