Although they engage in jams from time to time, they are not a "jam band".

Now these are jam bands.

And I suppose they suck equally.

Well if ABB is not a "jam band" then DMB is definitely not. Jessica is a jam song. ABB also has a song called Mountain Jam which is at least 30 minutes long , depending on the version you listen to. I believe that would qualify them to be a jam band. But, if you listen to JamON then you could also say DMB is a jam band since they play his live music and he does sometimes jam.

quote:

Rolling Stone referred to the group as "without question the first great jam band, and they took the jam to heights that it had not previously reached."[165]

Phish is the most absurdly overrated band of all time.

Agree on Mountain Jam, but Jessica is not a jam at all.

It's 100% composed music.

I guess you could say ABB is a live jam band, but more southern rock in the studio. Whipping Post is another example of their 20+ minute live songs. Each member of the band had different favorite bands. They would each try to bring some of their favorites style together. In the end VOR dumb.

Gregg Allman disagrees with you. He made the claim that ABB was the first jam band.

The definition of jam band just so some of you can calm down about who is or isn't one :

quote:

Jam bands are musical groups whose live albums and concerts relate to a unique fan culture that began in the 1960s with The Grateful Dead, and continued with The Allman Brothers Band, which had lengthy jams at concerts. The performances of these bands typically feature extended musical improvisation ("jams") over rhythmic grooves and chord patterns, and long sets of music that can often cross genre boundaries

Ranking jam bands is like ranking Single A baseball teams, only attendance matters. In todays market, no one sells more tickets than per show than Phish. 4 nights of yeMSG packs in over 80K soulless, that's more that an entire WSP Winter/Spring Tour.

If you were ranking bands that actually jam - UM, Twiddle, and the Disco Biscuits would be at the top of your list.
