Queen in Houston - who's going?

Anyone else going this weekend? My first concert (when I was 12) was Queen at the Municipal Auditorium on Halloween night in 1978. IThat was the first date on their Jazz tour. It's not Freddie, but I'm glad my kid gets the chance to see Queen in concert. And while there are a couple decent Freddie impersonators out there on youtube, Adam Lambert is about the only guy I can think of who can be himself and still do Freddie's music justice. Should be well worth the 350 mile drive to Houston.

I had no clue...I knew Lambert was performing with them at some shows, but I didn't realize it was an actual tour.
I am now curious what people think about him/them...

There was Freddie Mercury. Now there is everything but.
It simply is what it is - a tribute band that includes original members.
I'm not trying to be harsh and this isn't always the case when a lead singer is replaced - Bon Scott to Brian Johnson, for example.
Certain frontmen are irreplaceable. For those we've lost - guys like Phil Lynott, Brad Delp, Cobain, Cornell, etc., easily fall into that category. And Freddie Mercury is the Gold Standard for this.

Queen without Freddie isn't Queen.

I agree Ace. Freddie was such an integral part that is simply impossible to replace. Hell, bassist John Deacon hasn't participated in this at all.
My son inquired about going to see this but I told him to look up Hungarian Rhapsody ('86), We Will Rock You - Montreal, or A Night At The Odeon ('75). That is Queen.

I'm going, taking the kiddos with me.
I've wanted to see Queen ever since A Night at the Opera. Brian May is my favorite guitarist. Nobody can replace Freddie, but the thing is, Lambert doesn't try to, and he acknowledges that he couldn't.
The clips I've seen online look great, and we're excited to be going.

Oh, no doubt. Freddie is the GOAT. End of story. And I was fortunate to see him in his prime - long haired, no mustache, black and white jumpsuit Freddie Mercury.
There are bands that become "new" bands with another singer, like Van Hagar. This is not that and isn't intended to be (although I'd buy the CD if they released some new original music with Lambert). This is 2/3 of Queen's musicians doing Queen music, but it is with one of the few singers capable of doing the music justice (and I say this having seen Lambert perform live before). No I one will ever match Freddie though. Ever. That being said, Brian May could do a solo act playing Queen's music and I'd pay to see it. Brian May is one of the most unique and original guitarists, with possibly THE most signature sound.

Anyone who laughs at traveling that far to see Brian May perform live can not call themselves a Queen fan.

No one will ever be Freddie. You take what you can get. I'm going see Roger Taylor and Brian May. Lambert kid does a pretty solid job.
Off topic, Guy who replaced Lou Gramm in Foreigner is amazing.

I really don't like the route Journey and Styx took. It's like they are trying to sound like clones. The guy fronting Styx even dressed like Dennis DeYoung - first time I saw them with the new guy, people around us thought it was the original singer. Adam Lambert is a great live singer - better live than he is on CD, because he just unleashes on stage rather than trying to be studio-perfect. And he is just a tad flamboyant by his own nature without trying to mimic Freddie.

Foreigner has had 41 different members since the bands inception, they my be the best representation of a band that exists in name only.

Going Wednesday night to Nashville. Cannot wait, bucket list. Adam is a great choice to fill a role no one can.

I saw them in 2014. Lambert is outstanding.

You should be. I thought about seeing the tour until i saw YouTube videos with lambert. He's atrocious. Definitely not wasting my money on that.

What a silly post. Reviews of the tour have been the absolute opposite of what you just posted. I live in Colorado, but missed the show in Denver. I'm flying to Nashville tomorrow for their show at Bridgestone. Seeing Brian May and Roger Taylor in person is worth every penny.
ETA: Here is a USA Today review...

They're not coming anywhere around here, so I don't have to decide if I'd want to go or not, lol...however, if John Deacon was onboard, I would've made an extra effort to see them. He's not as iconic as Freddie, but he was pretty damn important in his own right, and 3/4 of Queen probably would've tipped the scales for me.
That said, I take these reviews with a grain of salt...not just Queen, but any heritage act in general. If these publications were around during the bands' glory years, they probably would've ripped 'em to shreds. It's nice to see some of these bands getting their due, but it's too little too late for this cynical frick

Nashville was beyond words good. Lambert is on another level and the sound /production was flawless.

I was there last night as well, and came here to post exactly this. It was probably the best show I've ever seen - right up there with Prince. People shitting on it because of Adam Lambert have no idea what they're missing. Truly an incredible experience.
