Walked into work the other morning and this battle was going on.

Mj was a better entertainer and appealed to a wider audience. BUT someone else was writing his music while prince is an incredible musician.

I take prince for his musicianship and influence on other artists.

Writing: Prince wrote all his own material. MJ didn't write. He did have several co writing credits but no one would argue the fact that Prince was a prolific writer.

Musicianship: Prince played every instrument on every album. MJ has been credited with playing some percussion.

Producing: Prince produced his own material from day one. MJ never produced his own material, depending on Quincy Jones and his staff of world class musicians.

Performing: Toss up.

Prince was a better musician but Michael made better music. You put a greatest hits record together for both artists and Michael wins in a landslide.

As an artist and musician there's not much of a debate, Prince with ease.

Overall body of work? Tougher call.

Agreed. Prince was a total musician. Both were talented but Prince was an awesome writer and mastered most instruments and didnt diddle kids.

MJ (just barely) and only because I have been really into his music since I was very young.

I first seriously listened to Prince in 2003 when his "Musicology" album came out. Over the next couple years I really dove into his catalog and was blown away with some of his music.

It bums me out that we are referring to both in the past tense.

Prince was a better musician but there's no doubt that Michael Jackson was a bigger star.

MJ has better songs and is the first music I loved.

More talented, Prince. Could do it all.

Prince, easily. MJ was just pop friendly dance music, with R&B influences. Also, MJ was more about the performance than the music. Only a handful of songs had any substance (Man in the Mirror remains my favorite song of his).

Prince was primarily a rock musician, with some dance influences. He pioneered a new kind of funk. And that battle was during my formative years - 1999, Thriller and Purple Rain were all my high school years. To quote Chris Rock, "Prince won."

Prince by default, but as others have said, he was much more talented.
