The fact that you would include "Steal My Sunshine" and "Wuthering Heights" both in your top four only demonstrates how amazingly complicated and unpredictable is the matter of musical "greatness". Personally, I think the former is an OK song but far too simple melodically and lyrically to qualify as "great", whereas the latter is certainly up there for consideration... it's got hooks, a captivating melody, and foremost a connection to a great work of literature.

I think the greatest rock/pop song ever produced is "Bridge over Troubled Water"... orchestral, hymnal, Simon's dark but still optimistic and life-affirming lyrics... and then there's Garfunkel's brilliant vocal performance. It just can't get any better.
