I found this video from Wings of Pegasus and it explains how it differs from the sound when it is live. It seems people are having issues with it.

Pitch Correction

What does the board think about pitch correction?

It’s an abomination. If you’re not talented enough to sing one note in tune on a punch-in you should probably be flipping burgers.

Where does one draw a line between "natural" and "artificiality" when discussing reverb, EQing, filters, compressing, etc, etc.? Seems to me that pitch correction is just another "tool" in a producer's toolbelt. Like anything else, it can be over or under utilized.

Phil explains in the video that Home Free abused this pitch correction for the song colder weather.

He said they sounded better live without the pitch correction. Also he said with pitch correction he was unable to know who is singing what part in the pitch correction and the vocals sounded like Justin Bieber.

Yeah, I saw what he said in the video. But the same could be said for any other effect, EQ adjustment made during the production and mixing processes.

Speaking of that auto-tune is another issue.

Here is what Britney Spears sounds like without auto-tune.

Seems like it is lazy and cheap.

As good as Home Free is, they have no need for pitch correction nor auto-tune. They are excellent vocalists and this makes them look bad.

I saw some comments from Fil on pitch correction in another video. I can somewhat go along with the take that it's another tool in the box for producers & recording engineers. However I also think that it's one more element, and a very strong one, in putting out a product that removes more & more humanity from music and tries to create a "perfect" sound. To me, removing occasional rough edges does exactly the opposite from creating "perfect".

Admittedly I'm not the target demographic for pop music, but I think it has an overall larger impact in music and culture to do this. There are individually unique imperfections or characteristics that make most of the older legends great, in addition to their overall talent. Making so much of today's music to this manufactured standard removes much of the interesting part of it.

They’re manufacturing a more perfect product for we, the music consumer.

It doesn't sound very perfect to me.

I think one of Fil's biggest peaves is going back and pitch correcting live performances. that's way over the line IMO

I prefer the raw and rough edged sound to the more smooth and boring sound, it just all sounds the same and it has no personality.

Auto-tune wasn't around until 1997. I could hear clear differences in pop music from the 80s and the auto-tuned soaked pop music of today. That music is for brain dead folks.

Back then you really had to be a good singer to do well in pop music but now with auto-tune dipped in syrup, you can have an average voice and still hit it big.

Is that supposed to be a negative? Sounds pretty damn good.

But yeah auto tune has gotten way out of control the last few years.

It isn't negative or positive but the pop industry telling these singers to change those voices to a sound that isn't natural to them.

Add in auto-tune that is abused to the highest level and you hear what no longer sounds like a real person singing but a machine.

If you’re a fan of auto tune, find the video of it being applied to Steve Perry.

It’s the work of the Devil himself.
