I actually like Big Boat...well, some of it...but it is growing on me. It is a sort of departure from their usual, but it is creative.

Remember back when Hoist came out?? The phans were up in arms because it was a "soft" and "radio phreindly" album (but really, anything that followed Rift would be tame to a degree)...Turned out to have some really great songs.

I was still kind of a n00b at the time and didn't fully appreciate it, TBH. That 2nd set was incredible though. And I wore the tape out when I got it a few months later.

Eh, like the Dead you have to be in the moment, it certainly isn't about the music

You gotta admit that it's pretty tight when they jump on trampolines?

How many musicians could pull that off??

Only phish (tgoat)

True, but 94-97 is the span I saw them the most.

97-01 was when i saw all my shows. Probably saw about 50 plus shows in that time frame. I havent seen them since the first hiatus though.

I still enjoy seeing Phish. Granted, they don't blow my head off like they used to (although Charlotte '11 was close), but I still have a good time. I dunno, maybe it's because I've gotten old and I'm just happy to be there, since I've only had enough free time to catch 4 shows in the 3.0 era...

But yeah, nothing from 3.0 can match the shows I saw back in the day, my personal highlights being Halloween '96, Atlanta '97, The Great Went, Hampton '97, Auburn Hills '97, Big Cypress, and others between '95-'00...

I was coming to post this. Sample in a Jar *gasp* really turned away the true phans.

I've listened to Big Boat and to be honest, some sounded good and better than Fuego even though nobody is going to claim it better than any of their 20 year old plus releases.

I just don't get the whole Grateful Dead, WSP, Phish love. Can someone please explain it to me? Can they be enjoyed sober?

Please recommend the best album for someone who has never listened to Phish. I will download it today and give it a shot. Thanks.

Well the grateful dead was actually a good band for several decades.

Phish was good for one decade.

WSP was never good

He's trolling you, though Farmhouse isn't that bad.

Rift is their best studio album and where I would start. If you like it, go straight to their live stuff. A Live One is where I'd start there.

Hell, I remember fans complaining about the songs they debuted in Summer '97. But once they got to hear a heater of a "Ghost" or "Piper" in person, they shut their mouths pretty quick

For a long time, Auburn Hills '97 didn't get much love, apart from the people who were actually there. Hampton and Dayton always seemed to be the "sexy" picks, while Auburn Hills barely got a mention. For years, I lobbied hard that Auburn Hills was the dark horse of dark horses, so I'm glad to see people finally coming around to give it the props it deserves. It probably got ignored because people looked at the setlist on paper, saw the 2nd set, and thought "meh, too many new songs"....their loss!

IMO there's plenty in that show to make a case for being in the top 10 of all time, but the first 45-50 minutes of the 2nd set can't be touched...near the end of those 45-50 minutes, there was a point where it sounded like they were simultaneously jamming Tweezer, Izabella, Twist, and Piper all at once, and I could barely pick my jaw up from the ground, lol...
