I would always wrap it up good in a towel in my backpack. I don't keep a bunch of extra shite in there either so when I got to the guards, just pull the towel out and hold it in one hand making sure the flask wouldn't drop out and never had any problems. I only use the platypus type flasks, not hard ones.
