Wpuld you but Godsmack in this category?

Yes, post grunge with nu metal elements. For me they are basically in the seether and staind category, which is all nu metal.

quote:

“Denial – Seems it had to come” – Sevendust

"Don't deny me, darling, don't be afraid" - Disturbed

Nu metal denialism is a phenomenon in which an attempt is made to discount a legitimate nu metal band as a participant in the era, in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Even the most fundamental bands have been subjected to nu metal denialism, including Korn, Deftones, Static-X, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Incubus, Mudvayne, Slipknot and Disturbed.

People in this thread prob denying one of the bands they like is nu metal. Nu metal goes beyond korn.

Metalcore has rapping and trap beats all over the place these days.

While not under the nu-metal label, I think Metalcore's current state is very indebted to nu-metal. And probably worse for it. (And I know this is not true of all current metalcore.)

Not that I have ever been a huge fan, but the latest Underoath was unlistenable to me, and it was because all I could hear was the nu-metal beats and guitar stylings.

I think bands that don't have the DJ and hip hop elements would be better classified as Alternative Metal. These to me are bands that sound like Nu Metal, but are missing a key element. Nu Metal bands have occasional solos. Alternative Metal bands have solos more often. Not many Sevendust songs without a solo and same could be said for Godsmack.

Sevendust to me flirts with both Alternative Metal and Nu Metal.

Not that my opinion is correct...but when I think of nu metal, I do not include

Sevendust
Slipknot
Godsmack
Mudvayne
Rammstein
Five Finger
Three Days Grace

I am torn on Chevelle

Nu Metal to me my immediate thoughts

Korn
POD
Gravity Kills
Limp Bizkit
Papa Roach

Sevendust and Godsmack are Alternative Metal.
Rammstein is Industrial Metal
Five Finger Death Punch is Groove Metal
Slipknot is tough to figure where they go. They have extreme metal elements, but too melodic to be extreme metal. I think the cadence and pattern of vocals may lead to them being categorized as Nu Metal.
Mudvayne… no fn idea what to label them as. They could be alternative metal. They could be prog metal. They could be groove metal. Chevelle would also be alternative metal. They’re more influenced by Tool than anything like hip hop.

Three Days Grace isn’t a metal band.

I’m not too familiar with Gravity Kills but the other bands all have rap and hip hop influences.

Significant Other is a legitimately great pop music album - you can call it whatever subgenre of metal you want to. Deal with it.

Yes I would say the main aspect of nu metal is the rap influence, which bands like Godsmack and Disturbed don't have. Some people just lump every band that came out around that time into nu metal but they don't all fit. Slipknot and Deftones had some rap influences on the first albums but moved away from it. Slipknot does still have a dj though. Nu metal is one of the more fluid metal subgenres, lots of bands may dabble in it for an album or two but then change it up later.

Or some bands that start in one place evolve into Nu Metal, then leave. Anyone wanna talk about Machine Head playing Nu Metal for 3 albums?

Lock Horns

Here’s a debate from several years ago on what bands fall under nu metal.

Layne and Kurt were three years older than Fred... The founder of Slipknot is two years younger thank those two. There isn't a big age difference.

It hasn't aged well because it wasn't good in the first place, that is the worst offender of them all....Limp Bizkit.

Music tastes can change over the years as a 40 year old may not care about the music that they heard when they were 13 years old.

The Burning Red was a soulless cash grab and they should be (and I think they are) ashamed of themselves. I saw them play at one of those late 90s/early 00s festivals and the only older stuff they played was Davidian.

And agreed with those who say Deftones weren't Nu Metal. There's a reason why they stayed relevant while the others drifted away, until this recent surge of nostalgia.

Deftones can be put in a lot of different genres. I think the first two albums carry some Nu Metal, but they moved beyond that once they put out The White Pony.
