Nice stretch of metal shows for a somewhat sleepy rock/metal concert town

Jacksonville typically gets an okay amount of metal shows, but they are usually pretty spread out and not always high caliber acts. I've considered it to be similar to Baton Rouge for quite some time, probably a little bit busier.

Well starting in early September we had GWAR, then two weeks later, Helmet. A couple of weeks after that it was Cannibal Corpse, followed the next week by Prong. Four damn good shows in just over one month's time. I know that's nothing for the bigger cities but that is a pretty banner stretch here. Only one I missed was Cannibal Corpse.

And now we have also coming up The Sword in about three weeks. Don't know if I'll be there. It's same day as the Ole Piss game. If it's a day game then I just might make it to the show. Then in December, the mighty Crowbar returns for the first time in five years. Of course it's as the opener for High On Fire, but that's cool. I'll be checking that one out if I'm here in town.

Actually have heard of High On Fire for quite some time now but not too familiar with their music. Pulled up their latest on youtube last night and it's some damn good shite. Looking forward to that one.

High On Fire has some good stuff. I imagine you'll like there show.

Going to see the sword in about three weeks in N.O. Really looking forward to it.

From what you described, Jacksonville blows Baton Rouge out the water for good metal/hard rock concerts.

Yeah that's probably true actually. Even though this stretch is much better than usual. Even in a regular year, it does seem that the scene is quite a bit better here.

And yeah. Listened to the High On Fire again tonight and I think I'll like them a lot.

Saw The Sword open for Clutch and they were damn good. Now, if the Ole Piss game isn't at night...

Same here, at the HOB in N.O. And also again at the little hole in the wall stage on the second level of the HOB. My ears are still ringing from that show.

I can't wait to see how the new album comes off live. It's one of my very favorite releases this year. And considering all the great new music that's been released this year, that's saying a lot.

Maaann don't even get me started. I'm so beyond pissed off about this. Freebird Live has been the BEST live music venue in this town for over ten years now, IMO. And there are bands that have played there that I really don't see coming back to Jax now. Clutch is my biggest question mark. Saw them twice at Freebird and it was just the absolute PERFECT venue for them. Not sure where in Jax they would play now. Hopefully somebody will get them to make a stop.

I can understand if Judy Van Zant is ready to unload the business and take it easy. I mean hell I'm sure she deserves to relax. But to me it really seems like she's screwing the live music fans in this area by not finding someone to sell it to who would want to keep it going as a live music venue. It's going to become another bar/restaurant!!! YEAH!!! frickING AWESOME!!!! Because GOD KNOWS the beach doesn't have enough of those places!!

I just happened to have the news on the night they announced it. This was a month and a half or so ago, and I'm still just fricking livid about it.

ETA: The funny thing is that of the four shows we just had in my OP, only GWAR was at Freebird. So it's not like there are no other venues, but Freebird is the best. That show in a few weeks by The Sword is at Freebird. That's another reason I really want to try to make it. Definitely want to see one last show there before they shut it down.

I would love to go see Cheap Trick at Cypress Bayou casino but it's the same night as the last LSU game of the season (Texas A&M). There's no way I'll be able to talk any of my friends into it. If it somehow is a day game (unlikely) there's a small chance to go but even then it might conflict.

It seems like every time Cheap Trick plays around here it's bad timing.

Cheap Trick

Saw Cheap Trick twice back in the 80's in BR. Front row tickets for their show at the Assembly Center in summer of '82 and then at the State Fair in like '84 or '85. Cool thing about that show was that it was bad weather so it was moved for shelter, so I can say I saw Cheap Trick inside a giant tent. That's exactly what it was. Pretty cool and we made our way up front for that one too.
