This is a decent album....thanks U2!

I have to confess, I got so turned off by Bono's sanctimony for so many years that I stopped listening to him. I'll have to go back now that I'm over it.
Back in the day, I wore new grooves in every album from Achtung Baby to the beginning.

Agreed. I added the song Invisible they gave away around Superbowl time this year and it makes a fantastic FREE album.
Every Breaking Wave is the standout track for me

The first 2 things I thought of were Coldplay and the Killers while listening to a couple of clips. If that's what they were after, they nailed it.
Um, I am pretty sure that you should listen to Coldplay and The Killers and think of U2, not the other way around.
U2 came first and those bands have clearly been influenced by them. But, they became huge bands in their own right, so I have no problem with the influence going both ways. They are all of the same genre.

Sleep Like A Baby Tonight is the winner to me. It reminds me of a fusion between Please and Wake Up Dead Man.

Pop is (in my opinion) the most criminally underrated album of all time. It sucks to me that U2 got virtually no credit for branching out and making this insane mind-frick of a tour (the album wasn't quite as experimental as it was initially purported to be), but "Please" and "Gone" and "Mofo" are three of the best songs in U2's entire catalog. It is in my opinion the bookend of their "masterpiece" era: Joshua Tree / Achtung Baby / Pop.
I agree completely. However, no love for Do You Feel Loved? It's a fun, "Europop" dance song. That really was a top notch album.

I just downloaded the new album and am stoked. My dad introduced me to U2 as a kid, love Joshua tree.

U2 should have called it quits 2 decades ago

You like Phish and you're criticizing U2's recent albums?
Double standard much?

Have not purchased an album/CD since Joshua Tree. I am an old and just got turned off to Bono and all of his sanctimonious crap. The stuff from the beginning through Joshua Tree was pretty damn strong.

their best album is Achtung Baby. Nearly everybdoy (love them or hate them) acknowledges this. If you've never given it a try you should consider it - still holds up incredibly well, very European sounding. Kind of reminds me of that Duran Duran wedding album with "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World" only way more hip and great all the way through.

yeah, 'achtung baby' gets my vote as well. it probably didn't hurt that i was in the right place at the right time when i first heard it, which was back at college in a girl's room after a night of partying, and....well, you get the idea
as far as the 'pop' love goes, i'm meh on the album, but the songs really came alive on the tour. saw them at the "other" death valley stadium (in clemson), and was blown away at the visuals. really loved their performance of "miami" that night....shame there isn't a version of it on the official live DVD release. besides the show, one thing i remember was the boatload of folks (probably mostly clemson students) who sat on a hill right outside the stadium & were able to see the show from there....meanwhile, my seat was only 20 yards away or so from them, so i didn't feel so smart paying the money i did for my ticket, heh....
oh, and the itunes album is OK....may be a grower.
