New Modest Mouse album Strangers to Ourselves is.....

very solid.
Just finished first full rotation, like A side and C side best but overall its a strong album. Darker and edgier than WWDBTSS but overall sound is definitely somewhat different for the band. As always, there is plenty of unique instrumentation for sonic rock sound.
Lyrically, typical Isaac Brock themes of modern society being generic and disposable along with general hopelessness.... all very uplifting
Anyone else heard it and have an opinion?

I enjoyed it more than I thought. It's still too early for me to decide if this one's a keeper.

Was really into MM in the 2003-2007 timeframe, excited to check this out.

Much like We Were Dead... there are some songs I like, and some that I don't like.

I'm a pretty big fan of Modest Mouse, and this was my feeling on this album.
I really like the majority of the songs a lot. However, there are a few that are just not good, like "pistol".
Overall I enjoyed this album after their 8 year hiatus.

It's really starting to grow on me. Obvisously, it won't be my favorite MM album (decent chance it will be my least favorite), but I don't think they are capable of releasing an album I don't enjoy a good bit. Unless maybe they do a whole album of songs sounding like Pistol.

I still say We Were Dead is much better than people give it credit for. But this new one has a lot more that I don't like than I do. But it's got some bright spots. Sugar Boats and The Best Room were good.

It really is just a bad song. Hands down my least favorite MM song ever.

I got the album a few days go. It took me a few listens to really appreciate it, but the more I listen, the more I love it. I'd put it in the top 2 MM albums just behind The Moon & Antarctica. Ansel is the crown jewel of the album.
I agree on Pistol. It's the one song on the album that I can't listen to.

Yikes. Ive tried to force this album on myself and im pretty sure its my least fav or close. And I was really looking forward to it
there's a couple ok tracks but from the first listen its come across as a really lazy album for them .just my take of course

3/10... sounds like a modest mouse cover band. johnny marr contributed more than anyone thought.

Really? I can understand someone not liking it because they experimented with some different sounds, but I can't see how it's lazy.

Lazy in the sense that it takes no real turns. Its like an album of B sides from previous albums. we waited 8 years for this. I expected some memorable departure and less self indulgent quirk that brock is inclined to make alot of times

agreed. i don't care for this album and I think pitchfork nails it, although they gave it a higher score than I would have:

i think bassist and founding member eric judy leaving the band took a big toll on some of the "quality control" of the band, and specifically brock.
