Messed up a great song but her version was the hit.
The most successfull version of the song the night they drove ol' dixie down was a version by Joan Baez released in 1971, which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US in October that year and spent five weeks atop the easy listening chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 20 song for 1971. The version reached number six in the pop charts in the UK in October 1971. The song became a Gold record.
Baez's version made some changes to the song lyrics from the original. Baez later told Rolling Stone's Kurt Loder that she initially learned the song by listening to the recording on the Band's album, and had never seen the printed lyrics at the time she recorded it, and thus sang the lyrics as she'd (mis)heard the lyrics.

What are the lyrical differences?

She says, "Virgil, quick - come see. There goes The Robert E. Lee." (Implying it was a riverboat of that name.)
When Levon sings it, he says, "Virgil, quick - come see. There goes Robert E. Lee." (Meaning it was the general.)
She also says "I took the train to Richmond that fell" (???)
Levon sings, "By May the 10th, Richmond had fell."
She sings, "I don't mind, I'm choppin' wood, and I don't care if my money's no good."
Levon sings, "I don't mind choppin' wood, and I don't care if the money's no good."
She sings, "Like my brother before me, I took a rebel stand.
Levon sings, "Like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand."
She sings, "I swear by the blood below my feet, you can't raise the 'cane' back up when it's in defeat."
Levon sings, "I swear by the mud below my feet, you can't raise a Kane back up when he's in defeat."

Thanks for reminding me why I hate Baez. She's awful.

The one, and only, thing you need to know about Joan Baez is that she's a card-carrying communist.

She massacred this master piece by one of the worlds best bands and without doubt, one of the best vocalist of our generation.

My favorite version was actually done By Dobie Gray, It was from one of The Volunteer Jam Live Albums.
Wish we more singers like him.You know he probably caught a lot of flack for doing that song.
I give Joan Baez props for Diamonds and Rust though.
As far as the lyrics, especially the part about Robert E. Lee being the real thing or The Steamboat..if you look at it from the point of view of the man in the song, The Steamboat makes more sense, because, that's where the chopping wood happens. The boat is needing wood for fuel, and the ones on the boat are escaping and desperate, for an isolated man like Virgil,he would have no choice but do whatever they wanted, and hope they left quick.
