Name an album that you love from a popular group that was not considered a big success.

Name an album that you love from a popular group that was not considered a big success commercially.

I've got two...both from the same band.

Nothing Fancy is one of my favorite Skynyrd albums. So many deep cuts that you will never hear on the radio.

Cheatin' Woman, and On The Hunt are just two that really stand out.

Gimme Back My Bullets was Skynyrd at a time when drugs were starting to take there toll. Ed King had just left the band, but they still managed to put together a great album.

Double Trouble, and Searching are classic Skynyrd.

What are some of yours ?

Ramones - Pleasant Dreams. Rated at only 3 stars by Allmusic, and I have read the band didn't like it. I think it's their best.

Pinkerton was infamous for basically flopping after the massive success of the Blue album, even though it seems clearly to be Weezer's best overall album.

I actually love the Megadeth Risk album as well as the follow up, The World Needs a Hero.

village green is widely regarded as one of the best albums of all time

here's mine
critics hated it
quote:

Back to the Egg received predominantly negative reviews on release; author Alan Clayson writes of the album receiving "a critical mauling as vicious as that for London Town". In an especially unfavourable critique for Rolling Stone magazine, Timothy White described it as "the sorriest grab bag of dreck in recent memory" and lamented that none of the songs were "the least bit fleshed out", with the listener instead given "an irritating display of disjointed images and unfocused musical snapshots". After opining that, since 1970, "this ex-Beatle has been lending his truly prodigious talents ... to some of the laziest records in the history of rock & roll", White wrote: "Who, one felt compelled to ask, is in charge here? Back to the Egg provides the final, obvious answer: no one."

and it didnt sell worth a shite

but...
i think the songs are great, it sounds great, and it's held up better than most from that era

I like that album as well. I saw the Ramones on their last tour at 5 Points South Music Hall in Birmingham Alabama...
(Fantastic venue - now closed), they were touring the Adios Amigo's album, and it was phenomenal. All songs started with One, Two Three Four, and most songs were 2 minutes or less.

I attribute a good bit of my hear loss to that concert.

But it's nice to know someone else cares about it

This viewpoint has gained momentum over the years, but I disagree completely. Gimme Blue all day, every day.

I saw Skynyrd while they were touring supporting the ‘Bullets’ album. I really dug the two guitar army approach they had after Ed King left. Nuthin’ Fancy is great too.

Hard one for me to answer, defining success I think is the most difficult part

For example I loved this record

Portrait of an American Family failed to chart upon release. It eventually peaked at number 35 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart, on the issue dated March 25, 1995. The record was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in May 2003 for shipments in excess of 500,000 units. As of 2015, it has sold over 645,000 copies in the United States. Despite never entering the top 100 of the UK Albums Chart, in 2013 the record was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry, indicating sales in excess of 60,000 copies in that country.

..which would be a success for a lot of bands' debut record. So, idk I guess thats a decent example.

No Code is my favorite Pearl Jam album, by a lot. It seems like most of their fans think that it's pretty awful.

Nice pic of Technical Ecstasy. I would argue the better Sabotage was the beginning of the end:

My favorite Sabbath album and in the top 5 of all my records. Amazingly heavy, brutal, scary, progressive, etc. Just a masterpiece!

I enjoy music presented with great musicianship, but there are some very listenable albums which lack a high level of musicianship. I have all of Dad's CD's and have been going through them - all music made before I was born. Dad loved Grand Funk, I don't (though I'm Your Captain is good).

I listened to the Phoenix album last night (first time). They had added Craig Frost as the keyboards, and it was the first album after they separate from that obnoxious crook Terry Knight. The album is very listenable. The lyrics are simple but the keyboards are nicely done (I play the piano so I like keyboards). I enjoyed the album and gave it another listen this morning.

Head East's "Flat as a Pancake" is the same way. They're not going to win any Grammy's but the album is a solid listen.

I have gotten to like a lot of 70's and 80's rock. The pop music was also a lot better back then.
