Music you liked in high school that you wouldn't admit to friends

I was a teen in the 90s and was into hard rock as were most of the people I hung around. All the grunge bands, Tool, Rage, etc.... along with lots of the classics from the 70's and very little of the 80's. But although I would never admit it at the time, I enjoyed that Hootie album with "only wanna be with you", "let her cry", etc. I liked several songs off of it and that didn't really fit in with the music I listened to. I fully expect lots of "you must be gay" type comments so bring it on. Anyone else have artists or particular albums you liked but wouldn't admit it?

If you like music, you like it.

Why would I give a crap what anyone else thinks of what I like musically?

Totally agree now but my freshman and sophomore years in high school I did the same.

I was totally into the hair bands of the late 80's but also big time into Metallica and Iron Maiden.

ETA: I have to include Megadeth too. I still love those three bands.

There were a couple of New Wave guys in one of my classes that liked Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, etc. I used to make fun of them but when no one was watching I really liked all of the New Wave stuff.

All is good and I am still friends with them today when I see them but that is just the way it was in high school in the mid-late 80's.
The stations I listen to most on Sirius are 80's Alternative and Ozzy's Boneyard. I really don't listen to Hair Nation that much any more.

newgrass and old-thyme

jus didn't know enough about it to fully appreciate it at the time (fixed that though - found a whole new group of friends - and they all played it too)

I still like Third Eye Blind, saw them at the Varsity last year and even like their newer album. Apparently choads think they aren't hip and with it anymore.

I'm 26 and an unabashed fan of all of these and have them in heavily regular rotation. Less so Hootie but always glad to hear Darius Sucker belt out some soulful crooning.

Exactly. Not listening or "liking" certain music bc of what your friends think is just as bad/sad as jamming certain songs because the cool kids are doing it.

I still listen to mostly the same stuff but I remember singing along to "Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeah's every time it was played. I would never tell anyone that

Marco, were you never self-conscious as an adolescent? Most people were to some degree.

I'll admit that the only stuff I wouldn't admit to friends is sappy songs like Extreme's "More than Words" for obvious reasons.
