I think you should give his early music a second listen. He came out during the early stages of punk and rockabilly and most people who were fans of punk, rockabilly and new wave were Prince fans, ballads included.

Check out his debut album, "Prince". His second album "Dirty Mind" is also great. He performed on Saturday Night Live for his first time and played "Party Up". If you can find a video clip of that performance, it's mind blowing.

I've actually heard hardcore fans loved the 1978 debut "For You" more than "Prince," which was seen as a little more mainstream and gave him his first hit "I Wanna Be Your Lover." "Dirty Mind," though being brief, is one of my favorite albums from him without a doubt. From what I've heard about "For You," it's pretty dope while not a landmark album.

Btw, I love me some "Partyup." "You're gonna have to fight your own damn war, cuz we don't wanna fight no more!"

Well, in the rock era. Of course, he was the American Mozart.

In the SNL show, Prince and the band were chanting those lyrics and Prince threw his guitar down and walked off stage. The glory days of SNL.

He straightup threw the microphone stand to the ground, walked off and left his band on the stage. What a fascinating cat, he never got too big for SNL, whereas Michael never performed throughout his career.
