...Newsted gives an in-depth interview of his time in/break from Metallica.

LINK

Great player, great guy. Comes across as very even-keeled.

I have nothing against Newsted. Good player, good guy.

That being said, he was no Cliff Burton.

I think even he'd admit that.

Never knew he left on the same day Cliff died.

Jason's playing skills far outpace Cliff's at the moment...

I haven't heard Newsted in awhile, but I'm doubtful just based on the last time I heard him. Who knows, maybe he's gotten more proficient than Cliff was, but I was obviously talking about within the context of recording for Metallica.

It was my attempt at dark humor since Cliff can't play anything at the moment.

He played with soul when he was alive though.

Jason Newsted was a hell of a backup vocalist. Songs like Creeping Death, Master of Puppets, and Battery all came alive with him at the helm. I miss him dearly, and completely loathe Rob.

Yeah, the crazy thing about Cliff is that when you'd see/hear him play, he came off as a complete improvisationist, even within the context of their songs. Thing is, though, he was pretty steeped in music theory, arrangement, & structure. Much moreso than a lot of rock/metal bassists.

This thread prompted me to check out some of his recent solo stuff.

This is a solid metal song. I am impressed with his vocals also.

I thought Newsted joined after Master of Puppets.

He did; I think the poster was referencing Newsted's playing/back-up singing whenever they'd perform those songs live.

Ahh...

I remember seeing the Newsted exit discussed during the Metallica doc. Newsted looked pretty messed up over the whole thing--like he had done the most foolish thing in his life and knew it.
