Top 5 all time to me would be:
1: Ronnie James Dio
2: Rob Halford
3: Ray Alder
4: King Diamond
5: Bruce Dickenson
What would today's generation top 5 be?

Chris Cornell
Geoff Tate
Bruce Dickinson
Ronnie James Dio
Phil Anselmo
*Soundgarden was a metal band

That's the loosest definition of metal I've ever heard of

Depends on the metal.

Soundgarden was not "metal". Hard rock. Alt rock. Grunge rock. But they weren't "metal". IMO

Some grunge borders on metal and many metalheads consider it a legitimate sub-genre.
If any two bands fit this billing it's early Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. Although Soundgarden never identified as a metal band or acknowledged such particular musical influences, listen to Louder Than Love and tell me you don't hear Black Sabbath sprinkled here and there.
Kim Thayil at times sounds like a hybrid of Paige and Iommi.
Soundgarden may not be a metal band, but they recorded some metal music.

No.

Each of the below vocalists would be in contention:
Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth, Katatonia, and Bloodbath)
Matt Barlow (Iced Earth, Ashes of Ares, and Pyramaze)
Jens Kidman (Meshuggah)
Corey Taylor (Slipknot and Stone Sour)
Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad and Solo)
Randy Blythe (Lamb of God)

Ozzy belongs at the top of the list. He invented the genre.

Matt Barlow is GOAT (living at least, I actually think Dio is GOAT)

no he doesn't. although he was a part of some great music, his vocal talent isn't close to most of the names mentioned.

Iced Earth has had its share of world-class vocalists.
I really wish Barlow would have branched out more and done some additional collaborations and side projects. Jon Schaffer's guitar-playing becomes worn out quickly.

First off, Iommi's down-tuned playing is more responsible for heavy metal than Ozzy's vocal delivery.
Secondly, good God no, Man. Ozzy is one of the least talented singers to gain notoriety.
Is he iconic? Yes. Is his voice distinctive? Yes. Was he one of the greatest frontmen ever? You betcha. Does he stack up with the Dios, Halfords, and Dickinsons of the world? Hell no.

Agreed, but I think most fans can acknowledge true talent regardless of the subgenre.
A great vocalist should possess exceptional range and power. Melody is an added bonus, but some singers never demonstrate such ability because the music doesn't require them to do so.

A top 5 metal singers list without Halford...yikes.

No kidding. He's on the "Mount Rushmore" for sure.
Take a look at this write-up by an opera singer. It's pretty telling of just how good Halford is compared to everyone else.
