I love Cliff but he gets the Kurt Cobain syndrome - as in being overrated as hell. Hetfield is and will always be Metallica.

Absolutely agree. I love Cliff too but dumbasses whose only knowledge of Metallica is from VH1 act like he founded the band. He wasn't even an original member, he was hired, and while he had a huge influence Metallica was always gonna be pretty much all Hetfield's music with Lars arranging and ideas thrown in from the other 2, whoever those 2 were. In my own opinion some of Metallica's best solos are from Hetfield, not to mention all the single note lines and harmonies that he wrote. Hetfield is the only band member that can play every instrument, including piano. If he put out a solo album any casual music fan would say "oh Metallica"

Yeah. The 20-50K of folks they're playing for per night on their tour gives them the leeway to not notice people like you. Fun irony. The only difference being they don't have to pretend like they don't know who you are.

Is Lars better than a lot of working drummers? Yes.

If nothing else, he can play WITH James extremely well. His drum parts always go so damn well with James' playing.

This is true. Was just listening to Blackened today and it reminded me of how awesome most of James' rhythm parts underneath the solos are. Oftentimes they are not rehashes of the verse/chorus but completely new riffs designed specifically for backing under Kirk's solos and can be off time and very difficult. Lars' fill style works very well with those.

All those years of alcohol and drug abuse really fricked up James' voice and it shows in live performances.

Mark Tremonti has the perfect voice for it and is about a 10x better guitarist. Although his solo gig and Alterbridge are amazing, I can just see it now. Mark destroying Master of Puppets or Enter Sandman. I'm sure Metallica fans are tired of the wannabe thrash the boys have been putting out recently.

And then get Trujillo canned with Newsted as his replacement. Welcome to the glory days again, my friends.
