For those who play a lot of fingerstyle and use a thumbpick, what do you like to use? I really enjoy playing fingerstyle but I'm fairly new to it and really haven't been able to find a thumbpick that I like. I can play with or without it but prefer the cleaner sound I get when playing with it. I see Fred Kelly picks mentioned in other forums. Are these any good?

Also, the big problem I have is that they are too long. Do you file yours down or is there shorter versions available?

TIA

For fingerstyle acoustic I just use my thumbnail. I've been trying to learn to use a thumbpick for steel guitar but like you I'm having a hard time adjusting to the length of it. The one I use is a Dunlop Zookie with a 10° twist.

I have tried many times over the years to use one...but I become clumsy. I gave up and simply use my thumb nail.

It seems we all have similar issues. I can use them fairly well but to achieve any kind of speed seems impossible because of the length of the picks. I see they have speed picks. I might give these a shot.

They don't seem to slow down guys like Bela Fleck and Jerry Douglas.

Propik makes some similar to that (they call them Quick Picks) and I was also considering trying them out. I definitely like the Propik finger picks. This one also seems shorter than the other type.

So just for grins, last night I tried playing some fingerstyle with a thumbpick. Clumsy isn't the word for it , spastic might be more accurate. I felt like I suddenly had a whole hand full of thumbs. My brain wanted to do everything with my thumb, even the high strings. So my advice is grow your nails out.
