Love the band but I'm not a musician. It sounds like Jimmy Page tries to cram too many guitar licks into one early passage in the song "Rock and Roll", and sounds kinda awkward. I would love to hear opinions from music aficionados. Was this a goof that the band decided to leave in or does it flow better for others than it does for me?

I like this song, and it seems like a universally loved LZ song, but it's not one of my favorites by them. Maybe it is because I have had to see about 500 Chevy commercials that have this song, but it's not one of my favorites. I don't know music from a technical perspective, but can you be more specific on which part of the song you mean?

You have to be way more specific about what part youre talking about. This song is right in the pocket for me. The only somewhat awkward part is the intro drums that lead into the guitar part where it seems like he went slightly off time or the guitar came in slightly off time on the record. Other than that, the main riff is right in the groove and the verse riff is literally two notes. There are some fills towards the end that he's doing over the main riff that starts at the 2:53 mark after, but I don't find that it makes it awkward. It jumps out at you, but it's still on time and fits.

The piano in this song is like the banjo (I believe) in Gallows Pole. It adds so much. But still makes you shake your head.

LZ may have over layered the song on the recording? They were known for layering a silly amount of guitar parts together at times.

This. I still enjoy it but the commercials ruined it for a while.

I think the OP is referring to the riff between the main riff. It does make the song sound a little busy, but it is perfect. Without that little riff from D# to D, the songs sounds a little lame. IMO of course.

Listen to any LZ song and you hear that Bonham is one of the only drummers who plays behind the beat. Amazing when you hear it. This is an example of that.

No kidding.

Don't overthink, enjoy. As the Stones said, it is only rock and roll.

Not sure if everybody is aware but the off-time drum intro is a tribute / rip from the intro of "Keep A Knockin'" by Little Richard.
