I am a total Kendrick fanboi, and I definitely think he'll rank up there with the greats when his entire body of work is considered and finished.

That being said, I agree that this album is uneven, but I think that's one reason that Kendrick is so good. He doesn't just spit fire on verse after verse (which is what Joey does, imo). He tries to make interesting artistic statements.

That being said, when Kendrick DOES choose to spit fire (DNA, holy shite), he melts my face.

Ever since GKMC, I'll give an entire Kendrick album a listen quite a few times and really appreciate the artistic statement. Like others have said, though, I usually only have a select few tracks from those albums that keep coming up again and again in my rotation. Too many interludes, distractions and such on a lot of his albums.

I'm also not sure that a lot of people who critique Kendrick really understand the complexity of his lyricism and vision. This analysis of Duckworth from stereogum is pretty awesome:

quote:

The album’s wonderstruck up-from-nothing narrative and its scattered-but-intense musicality both find their ultimate expression in “DUCKWORTH.,” the song that ends the album. 9th Wonder, the man who helped catalyze an internet explosion of introspective underground rap at the beginning of this century, co-produced the song, and it continually shifts, becoming something new whenever Kendrick’s story changes. And it changes a lot. Kendrick starts out by telling the life story of Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, his label boss. It’s a mythic origin-story tale — a kid growing up in the projects, enduring hard times, willing to do whatever, just evading a murder charge.

But the story doesn’t end with Top Dawg starting his smart-rap empire. Instead, it ends when he heads out to rob the same KFC where Ducky, Kendrick’s own father, worked the drive-thru widow. Things turned out fine. Ducky knew that Anthony was a dangerous person, so he gave him extra biscuits everytime he saw him. Top Dawg liked Ducky, so he “let him slide.” And because they stayed on each other’s good sides, they were able to meet up once again, years later, in recording studios, both of them on the top of the world. But Kendrick doesn’t end the album on that note of triumph. Instead, he focuses on what could’ve happened: “If Anthony killed Ducky, Top Dawg could be serving life / While I grew up without a father and die in a gunfight.” The last thing we hear on the song is a gunshot. It’s an ending that’ll rattle around in your head, a stinging reminder of all the potential Kendricks out there who never had a chance to do great things the way this guy did. And that’s DAMN.: A stark and powerful piece of art that never lets you forget what a miracle it is that you get to hear it at all. That’s what a rap album can do.

Good Kid shits all over Butterfly

I like both albums but it's not even close. So much filler on Butterfly

I'm not saying it's THE greatest, but it's one of them

I get it. It's very poetic and he's much brighter than the majority of the artists left in that genre, but just because he's intelligent doesn't just put him in the GOAT conversation.

First 3 reviews are all perfect. This is poetic like TPAB, but I can actually jam it like GKMC. This album is so fricking good. Kendrick is for sure one of the best rappers of all time

So don't listen to it since "most of it" is bad to you. Move along.

He is one of if not the best rappers right now which really isn't saying much because the genre is completely watered down with average to terrible music these days.

Because of that he stands out so much among his current generation peers and this happens

quote:

First 3 reviews are all perfect

because it's better than most everything else coming out right now. But "ALL TIME"? Just no.

5/5 should mean there are some amazing songs and every other song is at least above average. There are some stinkers on this

There's rumor that he may be releasing a second album "Nation" this Sunday.

There's a thread on that further down. Interesting idea with the Easter metaphor. Lots of talk that DAMN was the UU for the real album that will come out on Sunday.

Would be genius. I think it's likely just fanboys who are a little underwhelmed by this release and are looking for a genius surprise.

Big Kendrick fan, really like DNA, HUMBLE, ELEMENT and a few others. Top to bottom though, this is not even close to his best album imo. Very very good album but not his best to me.

HUMBLE is the only song that I like so far. Hoping some others grow on me as I listen more over the next couple days
