There was only a vague resemblance to the opening chords in my opinion.

Very vague....really a stretch to compare those two. Just a money grab. Why did they wait so long?

I disagree,

Both sound extremely similar to me.

I think it was very unfair to the plaintiffs that the judge did not allow Spirit's song Taurus to be played during the trial.

It is weird for the judge to do that.

quote:

Experts who testified for the trust said the two songs bear striking similarities, while defense experts said they shared a common musical building block.

The lawsuit said Led Zeppelin had a history of ripping off works by other songwriters and had settled at least six other copyright cases.

Spirit stole it from Sonata for guitar, violin and strings by Italian composer Giovanni Battista Granata comes in at :30 mark

I've already listened to Sonata for guitar, violin and strings by Italian composer Giovanni Battista Granata and heard that argument before.

Stairway to Heaven sounds much more similar to Taurus than Taurus does to Sonata for guitar, violin and strings.

I was a fan of Spirit back in 1968 after I heard their first album and then heard them at the First Atlanta Pop Festival in 1969. When I first heard Spirit play Taurus then I heard Led Zeppelin play Stairway to Heaven I thought Led Zeppelin ripped off Taurus from Spirit.

I still do but the Court has ruled so as the Beatles would say, "Let it Be".

Moneygrabbing bullshite. I'm not so much glad Zeppelin won because I'm a lifelong fan as much as because it would have opened a floodgate of either conniving or merely delusional accusations of quasi-plagiarism.

Because Marvin Gaye's family got to a little more blood from that stone. I think Robin Thicke of course sucks, but he got screwed. Glad they put an end to that shite.

I've pointed out the guitar riff in the Doors "5 to 1" and a riff/progression in "Black" are similar. Many people have used that riff. For decades.

Really, the list of similarities like this is endless. And it would end up coming down to simple chord structures and the use of the only melodic patterns that work within that framework. It's a finite thing that gets shuffled up and done in different cadences each time but melodically, the options are limited.

If we get to a point where we're litigating between pieces that utilize G, A and D for their basis, there would literally be no end to it. Nobody should kid themselves that it wouldn't come to that.

Zeppelin and Page as a guitarist in general is very rooted in classic blues progressions.

They're one of the top 5 widest known and most influential bands of all time.

Of course people are going to say they ripped off or whatever but there are only a finite number of chord progressions and note arrangements.

Someone steals your exact solos or lyrics, frick them.

Someone rooted in blues sounds vaguely like another artist rooted in blues? Get over it.

The jury, however, was not allowed to hear the original version of the song allegedly copied, but a rendition, because its copyright extends only to sheet music.

Even in a court of law.

it's similar for sure but both seemed derived from that italian guy and it's such a small part of stairway to heaven that I don't think the case is justified

corrupt arse judge right there. If you're having a suit comparing similarities of two songs then it's only logical for jurors to hear both.

Our judicial system is a joke nowdays.
