Does anyone here remember the pride of Springhill, LA-Joe Stampley?

His group, the Uniques, created a sensation in Shreveport and North Louisiana in the mid-'60s with romantic ballads like "All These Things" and his signature heartbreaking rock & roll song "Not Too Long Ago".

Joe Stampley became a successful country artist in the 1970s.

Roll on, Big Mama!! The man was Travis Tritt before Travis Tritt.

I knew the solo remake Stampley did on "All These Things", then I heard the original and was blown away. It should have been a monster hit up there with Unchained Melody. Great singer.

I remember his music well from Shreveport's Louisiana Hayride. I really enjoyed Moe Bandy and Joe Stampley.

From one of those mid-1960s pop music shows - either Shindig (ABC) or Hullabaloo (NBC).

it's a fave of mine too

Only made #97 nationally, but I've heard it was a big hit in the Gulf South region

I bet it was played at quite a few proms of the time

I'm thinking it was Shindig.

Yeah, they were kind of a big deal for a minute or two. And All These Things was the ultimate "slow dance" of the night.

I couldn't find them on the guest lists for Shivaree, Shindig, or a similar show Hollywood-a-Go-Go.

Their only IMDb credit is American Bandstand, but I don't think AB used that kind of set, or hired that many extras.

Here are some shots of the Shivaree set:

They look similar. Hard to tell. Could be Shivaree, but I also think they were on Shindig.

And, if I'm not mistaken, Hullabaloo was broadcast in color.

I read somewhere the song "All These Things" was written in 1962 by Allen Toussaint under the pseudonym "Naomi Neville".

The most successful version of the song was recorded by Joe Stampley in 1966, and became his 3rd #1 country single.

Joe & Moe were still played on classic country and at a couple bars when I was college, but I never knew Joe Bandy's earlier or solo work. One came on Pandora a while back that was pretty cool, been meaning to check out more. Kind of that post-Rockabilly Southern rock style.

Now that you mention it, it definitely has the Neville feel to it.

Here's the original with Art Neville singing. LINK

And Allen Toussaint explaining how he wrote it. LINK

BONUS: Elvis Costello singing it. Wow. LINK

I remember them well. I was in high school in North La. then, saw them many times in Bastrop, Monroe, at Northeast, and in Shreveport and at LSU in 73/74. Have all 4 albums, very good 60's rock n roll. Saw a battle of the bands between the Uniques and John Fred and the Playboys about '72 or '73 or so. I followed Joe when he switched to country to make a living and he did well. Youtube has a lot of them on it. I knew his brother, the bass player, in the 80's. His wife and my wife were both clothing buyers at the Dallas Apparel Market every season and we would meet and talk about the music many times.

Yes, their big hit "All These Things" was originally an Aaron Neville song from New Orleans. If you were a musician too or a music fan you knew a lot about New Orleans music and the Neville Brothers, along with others. KNOEam radio in Monroe used to play a lot of that music along with other am stations back then. Our band, The Apollos, covered several Uniques songs.

Lee Tillman's version was more up-tempo with a terrific horn section :
