Livingston's gone to Texas, High Cumberland Jubilee, Travelin' Clean... all very good, laid back country tunes he did.

I really like some of his stuff such as:

Tin Cup Chalice
Mademoiselle
Havanah Day Dreamin'
In the Shelter
Savannah Fare You Well
Son of a son of a sailor
Pirate looks at 40

It serves a time and purpose. He's also put out a bunch of crap as well...

Agreed on The Wino & I Know.

I like a lot of his stuff up through Off to See the Lizard. African Friend has to be one of his most underrated songs. I also love Hot Water - Prince of Tides, Bring Back the Magic and Great Heart.

Other songs I could listen to anytime include
Death of an Unpopular Poet
Woman Goin' Crazy on Caroline Street
The Captain and the Kid
Havana Daydreamin'
Banana Republics
In the Shelter
Stranded on a Sandbar
Biloxi
Son of a Son of A Sailor
Pirate Looks at 40
Island
Stars on the Water

There are still some good songs after the Lizard album, but they are few and far between. Pacing the Cage is a great cover, and Tonight I Just Need My Guitar is really good.

Once you get to License to Chill you really start running out of anything you would want to listen to more than once or twice.

He put out some really great stuff. I love just about every album up to Barometer Soup. After that, he started getting too cheesy.

One of my favorites:

The Night I Painted the Sky

I have all but stopped listening to him. fricking License to Chill and the bullshite Nashville sellout songs kind of ruined him for me. I never thought he was going to stoop so low as to work with Kenny Chesney.

Agreed. I just looked at his discography and there are 10 albums after Off to See the Lizard. I could probably come up with one album of good material from those 10 albums.

One of my favorites too--great harp solo by Fingers Taylor.

Barometer Soup was a really good album.

Other old favorites (non-hits):

Tryin' to Reason with Hurricane Season
He Went to Paris
Nautical Wheeler
We are the people (our parents warned us about)
Stories we could tell
Migration
Wonder Why we Ever Go Home
Banana Republic
Survive
Cowboy in the Jungle
Coast of Marseilles

I agree. Buffett is loaded, there was no reason for him to sell out. Certainly no reason to give his blessing to that lame fig Kenny Chesney to cash in on his niche. Regardless, old Buffett is still good stuff.

I wouldn't call it selling out. He was always country to an extent, and he says he always had the idea to do some country duets. After doing "five o'clock" with Alan Jackson and going to the CMA's he saw his opportunity to ask all the country bigwigs to sing with him. Why the hell not?

Say what you want about his cheesy stuff, but he's a fantastic writer. Great performer and fun shows. I really enjoy jimmy on a boat day.

True, but it is like he went too far down that road. Maybe he was thinking that he had to do so in order to attract new/younger fans.

The one thing I will give Jimmy, even now, is that he is always willing to promote lesser known artists and brings the songs of under appreciated songwriters to his huge audience. I can't count how many Jesse Winchester songs he has recorded (off the top of my head - Biloxi, Defying Gravity, Rhumba Man, I Wave Bye Bye). And I know in the past he has had Zachary Richard and Sonny Landreth, among others, on tour with him.

Doing country wasn't selling out. He started out as a straight country musician. Selling out was making mediocre, cliche bullshite with the likes of Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney. What he did is the definition of selling out.
