Still listen to Croce. Interesting musical side note (from AXS website):

quote:

Early on in his career Jimmy Buffett had a friendship with another budding folk singer in Jim Croce, who has some huge crossover hits with “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim” and “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” in the early ‘70s before his untimely death in a plane crash in 1973. Croce’s death left a gaping hole at ABC Records and they sought to fill that hole with Buffett and his new Key West sound. Buffett would be compared to Croce a lot early on at ABC Records with the company even releasing a press release that read: “He was compared to writers like Kris Kristofferson and he was expected to fill the space left by Jim Croce.”

Makes you wonder if Buffett would have had the same career if Croce had lived.

Probably. Buffett was no guitar playing songwriter. Not really.

Not the level of Croce guitar.

Parrot heads would have still found Buffett.

Croce probably would have been another Gordon Lightfoot. Which is by no means a knock!

He wrote so much in such a short time. He was in his 30's I believe so he had a lifetime worth of songs floating in his head. Doesn't mean he had another decade worth untapped. Nice to wonder though.

The different theories out there about his crash is pretty interesting.

Jimmy Buffet sabataged Croce's plane via a trained parrot which flew into the plane engine kamakaze style.

When one looks back - very, very few artists who died so soon into his or her music career had the body of work that Croce could have bragged about upon his death.

Hendrix? Buddy Holly? Duane Allman? Morrison? Joplin? Not sure anyone else is in the conversation - with Croce being the best singer of this batch and as good a songwriter as any of them.

Absolutely stands the test of time, good stuff.

Nobody is really clear why they left that night (the law made them leave, they were out of booze in a small town etc), but it is accepted the pilot tried to take off from the taxi runway so they crashed about half way up the pine trees around the runway.

My cousin was at his last concert.

I guess he was playing at North Western.

Buddy Holly?

Buddy is a great comparison for prolificness in a short period.

What made Croce special was his ability to translate people he met into interesting stories.

Tom T. Hall might be a comparable as a storyteller.

Here's Tom's demo of his song "Harper Valley PTA". Great!! LINK

The three records he put out before he died are absolutely superb!

I think this was his last hit.

Another story I read is the cops were trying to bust them with drugs so they decided to leave that night and the cops drained the fuel and they took off without knowing. Another was the pilot had a heart attack.

Amazing how sketchy air travel was for these guys in the 70's. LynArd Skynard, the damned engine was practically on fire and it flaming up was a known thing, yet they got in it.

They were scheduled to leave right after the concert, NTSB speculated the pilot had a heart attack during takeoff due to fining of severe coronary artery disease and the fact he ran form his hotel to the plane because he was late for their scheduled take off. I have talked to several pilots that flew in and out of that airport during that time, have never heard anything about using the taxiway until now. The taxiway in the direction they crashed only parallels the runway for half its length and is very narrow.

The Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crashed because the pilots miscalculated the fuel burn due to the engines having higher than normal fuel consumption and they simply ran the fuel tanks dry.

Croce was so awesome. "Operator" always brings a warm and fuzzy feeling when I listen to it. Such a talented song writer.

I've always wondered why "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" were practically the same long, just in different lyrics. Both are badass songs; I guess he loved the underdog story and the lesson that there's always someone bigger/badder/tougher/better/richer.

Good stuff. Oh also, IIRC he had really exploded between the time he booked the Natchitoches gig, and the date of the actual gig. He could have cancelled, due to such a small venue for a star of his newfound fame, but he decided to be loyal to his fans. Sucks the gig was the fate of him.
