These are two of my favorite bands from the 70s. Both bands had very unique sounds when compared to their contemporaries. Both had very imaginative storytelling in their songs. Both were led by extremely talented musicians in Ian Anderson and the Fagan/Becker combo. What gives? Rarely see these two mentioned as favorites from that era.

Along with The Rolling Stones, Zeppelin, and The Allman Brothers, they make up my top five of that era. I definitely don't think Anderson gets enough credit for his genius. The connected story between Aqualung and Cross Eyed Mary is one of the most strange thought provoking story by songs combo I have ever heard. The lead singer/master flute player role is unique to any era of rock.

And Steely Dan. Geez....they are great just based on the 10 or more songs everyone knows but throw in songs like Green Earring, The Royal Scam, Black Cow, Don't Take Me Alive, The Caves of Altimira, etc.. and it gets absurd how much good stuff they produced.

They both have a jam band vibe - albeit without all those songs that never end.

I think Steely Dan is highly respected among other musicians - they certainly brought Jazz skills to a rock and roll audience. I think they're the best example of Jazz/Rock fusion of the 70s, and maybe ever. One of the most talented, musically, of all the 70s rock bands.

Totally agree on Steely Dan. The Making of Ajais awesome to watch. Fagen and Becker worked with a "who's who" of musicians...Skunk Baxter, Michael McDonald, Steve Gadd, Mark Knopfler, Lee Ritenour, Paich and Porcaro from Toto to name a few. Incredible lineups.

I agree, of course, on SD.

My opinion on JT was formed around the mid 90s after I bought a boxed set with about 60 songs. I had grown up hearing their 4-5 standard classic rock station playlist songs and always thought it was unique. It wasn't until I listened to the boxed set that I realized how great the band was. I later bought a CD called {As Classic Case} Jethro Tull Performs with The London Symphony Orchestra , and was blown away. Got to see them live in Atlanta at The Fox Theatre around 96 and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen live.

I've been rediscovering some 70's music and I agree both are great bands and underrated. Another underrated is Blue Oyster Cult. I've been into them lately and many of their best songs never were popular.

Saw Jethro Tull live on two different occasions. Very solid live act. One of the most creative bands of their time. Never saw Steely Dan live but I was always a fan just because they were not the run-of-the-mill stuff that permeates terrestrial radio.

Both bands my be great musically, but their lyrics leave a lot to be desired. Below are just 3 songs about pedophilia. Never was really into Jethro Tull so don't know about others by them but the 2 songs listed below by Steely Dan are just 2 of several.

Jethro Tull: Aqualung

Steely Dan: Everyone's Gone to the Movies, Throw Back the Little Ones, and others

true, but I believe a lot of their stuff was tongue n cheek ....
to their credit, they wrote about things most wouldn't talk about either

That may be true for some of the songs, but 'Everyone's Gone to the Movies' is just downright creepy.

It is about a man showing 8mm porn movies to little kids.

Kids if you want some fun
Mr. Lapage is your man
He's always laughing, having fun
Showing his films in the den

Come on, come on
Soon you will be eighteen
I think you know what I mean
Don't tell your mama
Your daddy or mama
They'll never know where you been

Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last
Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last

Listen to what I say
He wants to show you the way
Right down the hallway with open arms
To teach you a new game to play

Come on, come on
Soon it will be too late
Bobbing for apples can wait
I know you're used to
Sixteen or more
Sorry, we only have eight

Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last
Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last

Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last
Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last

Kids if you want some fun
See what you never have seen
Take off your cheaters and set right down
Start the projection machine

Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last
Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last

Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last
Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last

Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last
Everyone's gone to the movies
Now we're alone at last

While the lyrics you quoted are about a guy showing porn and maybe more to underage kids it does not mean that the band sanctioned the act. A band like say Metallica was not saying, hey we want you to commit suicide when they wrote Fade to Black. Music is a shared experience and exploring real life events even the seedier side is perfectly understandable.

I don't understand why this has to be explained so often. Same for movies.

Agreed. Their 2-disc greatest of is chock full of obscure goodness.

Yep, I found stuff I had never heard going through their collection and it was fantastic. Very versatile group.
