REM's IRS output takes a gigantic dump on the Smiths. Again, essentially invented a genre

They were both working they're own angle, and both were very successful. I just much more preferred The Smiths over REM. REM was just so boring to me.

To the extent England did have an indie scene, particularly the Mad City scene, it is in REM's wake. The Smiths and the like are traversing a path forged by Black Flag and REM.

REM's first release on IRS was in 83. The Smiths first release on Rough Trade Records was in 84. Not much of a wake formed in less than a year.

Yup. So what did phish do if they aren't the best indie or festival band?

They had multi-night stands but nothing like The Great Went, Lemonwheel, Clifford Ball, Oswego, IT, Festival 8, Superball, and of course the almighty Big Cypress.

A group of friends who worked on these festivals formed a group called Superfly. They took elements from the Phish festivals like camping and layout and created Bonnaroo. The rest is history.

The Smiths crush everything REM ever did.

I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you on that one big time. In fact, I wouldn't even call The Smiths an Indie band at all.

The Dead are absolutely the model. They were also, for most intents and purposes, an Indie band.
