Finding Pearl Jam in 1991-2 was a revelation for me.
Yep. I was having trouble finding a lot of music I really liked. When the first cord of Alive hit my ears, I knew this was different.

Their sound is just straight up classic rock. Listen to the solo in "Alive" and tell me that's grunge. Don't take it from me, take it from Mike McCready, re Evenflow:

Lyrically, though, Vedder was definitely feeding off that early 90s grungey woe-is-me vibe.

That's me pretending to be Stevie Ray Vaughan, and a feeble attempt at that. Stone (Gossard, Pearl Jam guitarist) wrote the riff and song; I think it's a D tuning. I just followed him in a regular pattern. I tried to steal everything I know from Stevie Ray Vaughan and put it into that song. A blatant rip-off. A tribute rip-off, if you will!

Pearl Jam is not classic rock, unless you mean it's been about 25 years since it debuted. All bands with an electric guitar player have been influenced by classic rock.

Arena Rock
LOL, no, but eventually they blew up so what choice did they have.
Pearl Jam - Evenflow
Pearl Jam is Grunge.
The alternative to the rock of the 80's hair bands that played on the radio. Grunge opened the gates to radio stations playing alternative music.
Yeah U2 and INXS got some radio time, but tons of alternative music did not, like NIN, depeche mode, etc.

Stp I'm pretty sure was from the nw because it was a mix of sound garden pearl jam iirc. And yeah I always considered aic was just metal same as metallica. Which I guess is kind of a genre of rock.
