They definitely get my vote. When they are at their best they create some incredible sound tapestries. I'm not as big a fan of their earlier, more hardcore stuff (although it is still good and has its place), but what they've evolved into is truly amazing.

Not even close and I'm a huge Mastodon fan. The correct answer is Rush.

I'd go with early Utopia, ELP, Genesis or Yes.

Rush and PG Genesis from the 70s and it really can't be topped IMO.

Not at all.

Yes gets my vote.

I knew Rush would get a few mentions in this thread. I like them, they're a great band, and definitely have Mastodon beat in terms of influence on other artists. Mastodon just scratches my musical itch a little more effectively than they do.

I like some of King Crimson's stuff, what little I've heard. I need to spend some time exploring their catalog since my understanding is they evolved a lot through the years.

They're not even the greatest progressive metal band. Depending on who you ask, that distinction probably belongs to Opeth or Tool. Both have longer careers with more enduring legacies thus far.

Aside from the classic prog bands from England (Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Genesis, King Crimson, etc.), there are two bands who are top contenders...Pink Floyd and Rush.

Pink Floyd created three of the most highly-acclaimed releases in the history of contemporary music, while Rush is arguably the greatest trio we have ever witnessed and has some immense compositions under their belt.

Pink Floyd wrote works of art which can stand the test of time. They are captivating, spell-binding, and mesmerizing. Pink Floyd is a spiritual experience. It transcends music in an auditory sense.

Rush wrote anthems. Anthems which can be shouted across stadiums and arenas all over the world. Rush has some of the most devout and ardent fans for a reason. There is no such thing as a casual Rush fan. They are a thinking man's band from a blue collar background. Neil Peart offers an abundance of cultural, literary, ideological, and artistic allusions in his lyrics, but it never strays beyond the comprehension of the audience. Peart is well-read not because of his affluent upbringing and tenure at university, but because he is an avid lover of literature.

In my opinion, you can't go wrong with selecting either Rush or Pink Floyd. Their overall bodies of work and legacies are critically and commercially significant enough to anoint either as the "kings" of prog rock.

So no, Mastodon is not the best prog rock band of all time. Honestly, they're not even in the top 10 at this point. But, I would contend that their six LPs are some of the strongest ever to start a career. I love the new direction they have taken on the last two records, and I'm curious how this supposedly darker upcoming LP contrasts with Once More 'Round the Sun.

I dont like genres and prog rock seems awkward for Mastodon.

I like all their stuff but Once More Around The Sun is pure quality.

You could argue them as the best modern prog band, though most would probably say Tool is. Too many greats from back in the day, and its unfair to Mastodon to compare any modern artist to beloved classics because in the vast majority of eyes there is nothing they could do to become the best.

I can't argue with that but my personal favorite would be Porcupine Tree.

Steve, are you a professional writer?

If not it would be great if you wrote a rock/metal blog

I would love to read it

No. Yes is the best, in spite of not giving it up earlier. I stopped listening after Tormato.

Here is another great answer.

Steven Wilson is one of the biggest figures in modern progressive music. His production work with Opeth alone makes him an exceptional contributor to the genre. I also like Dan Swanö's production work is extreme progressive music.
