As a beginner myself, I agree and disagree. I'm learning that the most important thing to do when looking for your first guitar is research.
I read articles and forum for about 3 months before I decided on which one was best for me.
There are several cheap guitars on CL but if you buy one that's not playable to your skill level. I think it's just a big waste. ....then again I could be wrong after all I am just a fuggjn newbie! lol

No, it is not. This guy was either a dumbass or a poser or both.

Thread derail: Anyone else hate that Gibson changed the Les Paul logo on the headstock this year? It looks like a 5 year old scribbled 100 on it and the lettering is super thick.

quote:

Whereas MAP (manufacturer advertised price) for a 2014 Les Paul Standard with a normal flame top comes in at $2999, the 2015 equivalent will start at $3879, marking a roughly 29% increase.

quote:

Other changes include the expansion of the Min-ETune automated tuning system, which will be re-branded as "G-Force," as standard on almost all guitars. In celebration of the 100th birthday of Les Paul himself, all 2015 Les Paul models will feature a swirly "Les Paul 100" headstock logo marking a departure from the traditional Les Paul logo seen on the guitar for decades. As for actual specs, Gibson is updating the nut to a brass "Zero Fret Nut" and increasing the neck width on most models.

frick THAT. Henry Juszkiewicz is a buffoon and is killing Gibson.

So I can't buy a Martin dreadnaught to strum D, A, G on because it has a far better tone than a $200 Takamine? I'm surely not Paige. I would argue any and all guitars are above everyone's skill level unless your someone who's mastered it like J. Paige.

Hey, I'm with you. I could easily get by with an entry level Taylor or Martin, but my next guitar will be in the $3000 range. Like I said, it's just plain fun to own and play cool guitars; I'm all for it.

For me, it is more about commitment to the instrument than skill level. Its not about owning an instrument that befits your skill. The question is whether you spend thousands of dollars on an instrument you will never play. That's the risk for every beginner, IMO - it may not stick and then you're left trying to sell your rig for much less than you paid.

If you go with the ole Squire-and-Crate its no harm, no foul if the hobby doesn't stick.

I tend to buy pretty nice when I'm getting into something, although I do try and leave room to grow. It's fun to work up to better equipment.

But I see nothing wrong w/ a beginner getting a LP. When I'm 40 and I start picking up some new hobby, I'm going to buy something pretty good.

To be fair those epiphone standards have the muddiest pick-ups known to man and the playability is noticeably worse. That said, he'd still be ahead $$ wise with a set of Burstbuckers, a complete rewire, and a good set-up. The tone is actually pretty good with those mods- but its still a struggle to play cleanly.

Flame alert- he'd still have been ahead of the game buying a Carvin CS6 (or the american made fenders)

I bought an Epi Les Paul for my first guitar. If I had purchased a Gibson, I'd probably still have it.

Yes, it doesn't make much sense spending big $$ on a guitar until one finds out if one enjoys playing enough to stick with it. In my case, I've been playing almost daily since I picked up my first guitar eight years ago, so that issue has been pretty well decided!

Not true. Gibson, like every other manufacturer, isn't as consistent on quality control as it once was (somewhat like the mid 80s), but their guitars are still some of the best out there.

2. never buy your first guitar new

I don't agree with this. If you have the money and it's something you've always wanted, why not? A new Les Paul is cheaper than a new Ferrari.

Depends on what you want and what you want it for. Some folks just like buying things new...especially if they don't know much about what they're buying.

If Guild reissues the Thunderbird, I'm buying it instead of getting a vintage for $4K.

Judging by the other Newark St models, there won't be a kickstand, or phase switches, or a properly wound bridge pickup.

Who knows what will become of Guild. Fender sold Guild to the Cordoba Music Group. I'm not really sure these folks even do a good job making classical guitars (their biggest production line up to this point).

If the new owners have an once of brains, they'll reissue some models that will bring the brand back....the Thunderbird and Bluesbird would be a good start.

i'm just saying craigslist because you can find a cheaper good guitar from someone who really thought they were going to learn guitar 5 years ago and it's been sitting in a closet somewhere.

sure, keep thinking that. gibson QA/QC has more problems than any other mainstream guitar company out there.

ETA: and look, gibson made some of THE best guitars ever made for decades. it just hasn't been the same quality since the 80's

ETA#2: I use to own a Gibson SG. it's my favorite guitar. I love old gibsons from the 70's.

I don't buy new cars or guitars because I've never settled on one I "had to have"...some folks think otherwise. I have a collection of 85 guitars and only bought 2 new (a 1972 Les Paul Recording and a 1992 Fender Custom Shop Strat); so, obviously I, like you, don't like pissing money away. Just remember, every used guitar was bought new by someone.

For Gibson being garbage since the 80s, I have a bunch of Gibsons and Fenders from different eras and have some base of knowledge on these brands. The ES 335s from the 70s and 90s I have are the same; can't tell the difference in workmanship. Gibson isn't as good as it once was but they're a hell of a lot more consistent than Fender and the brand isn't cluttered with junk like MIJ, MIK, MIM, and MIC crap.

Like anything else, there are good ones and some not so good....poor quality control!
