311 was good not great. I would put them at top 20-25 in the 90's (whole decade of subpar music)

For grunge I would saw tie between Nirvana and Pearl Jame (Nirvana vastly more influential at their prime, but Pearl Jam went the distance)

For Power Pop/Ballads - 3eb, goo goo dolls, Matchbox 20

For general alternative I would say Weezer & Red Hot Chili Peppers

311 could be tied for the top reggea rock band (tied with Sublime) but still it was a slightly gimmicky genre to begin with.

If we are talking cultural definition of the 90s, Nsync probably takes the cake. They were exactly what the 90s were, marketing driven groups that went after the 12-15 year old market, with cross sales in videos and magazines. This is the reason why the 90's largely sucked and partially (along with disruptive technology) why the purchased music bubble burst.

interesting take on everything, can't say that i disagree too much. In terms of n-sync, i'd say that britney spears or backstreet boys would be a better representation of the 90s. the big pop movement really didnt start til the late 90s(at least 1998) and n sync was really third fiddle to bsb and spears; it wasn't until the 2000s that bsb started fading and n sync's popularity rose. Also, as much as nobody wants to hear it, you can't mention 90s music without limp bizkit either. By the late 90s they were just probably the 4th most popular musical act, behind eminem, spears and bsb.
